This amazing opportunity is open to ANY 8th grade student, but you must apply. Applications are available outside the art room, and are due to Miss Christianson no later than next Friday, February 17. Students must type their answers to the application questions on a separate piece of paper, and make an art project that incorporates and presents their answers.

A Note About Fundraising
It’s fundraising season for many local clubs and organizations! While the MJ1 staff loves supporting our students in the many different activities this area has to offer, we can’t be responsible for order forms & funds that students carry with them, or with the distribution of items purchased. Feel free to ask staff if they are interested in purchasing any fundraiser items, but any involvement after that needs to be strictly between students and their parent or guardian. Thanks so much for understanding!
Lost n' Found
Box Tops Results!
The results are in! MJ1 collected 6,414 Box Tops, and AV-W collected 6,575. With other Box Tops that were collected prior to the competition, we have a submission of over 15,000 Box Tops. That's over $1,500 for our school! Nice job, everyone!!
MJ1 Drama: "The Little Mermaid"
This year’s Drama Club production is “The Little Mermaid,” directed by Ms. Kafka Duda and Mrs. Petersen! Auditions will take place Tuesday, February 21 from 3:30-5:30 in the band & choir room and are open to students in 5th-8th grade. Please meet there at 3:15. Note that not all students who audition will be cast. Roles will be posted by Thursday, February 23.

Alternate Transportation Forms
Click here for MJ1's Alternate Location Form. Without this form on file, your child's driver will not let them off the bus at their alternate stop.
If you are unsure whether your child has a current alternate transportation form filled out for this year, please call, stop by, or email agilbert@mhlt.org, and we would be happy to verify your child's bus paperwork. It is also vitally important to update any information address, phone number, custodial paperwork etc. with our office.
Including Children with Life-Threatening Allergies
Many of your children are in class with other children who have severe, life-threatening food allergies. As you plan class snacks, treats for parties and birthdays, etc. you might find this website helpful in including even those children with food allergies. The Safe Snack guide is an interactive list of allergy-friendly products to help keep allergens out of the classroom and the home.
Click here for the Safe Snack Guide.

Counseling Corner
National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), is celebrated from Feb. 6–10, 2017, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
School counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; for working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today's world; for focusing on positive ways to enhance students' social/personal, educational and career development; and working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. Professional school counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master's degree in guidance and counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.
Parents or community members with specific questions or concerns about school counseling programs should contact the school counselors at their local schools. More general information can also be found on ASCA's website, www.schoolcounselor.org.
