The OSD Tech Fair is coming up soon. This year it will be held at Capital High School from 10:00 a.m to 3:00 pm on February 11, 2017. The Instructional Technology Team will be hosting two professional development opportunities to help prepare staff to facilitate school presentation booths and student challenge teams.

We are continuing our Google Essentials Series in January with a focus on Google Classroom. In addition, we will begin a second Google Certified Educator Cohort for those interested in a self-paced online PD pathway with optional Google Certification.

1. Putting Together a Student Challenge Team

The Student Challenge is an exciting part of the Tech Fair designed to allow groups from each school to engage in using collaboration, problem-solving, and classroom technology to persuade, inform, and/or entertain an audience. This session will focus on the steps that sponsoring teachers can take to put together an effective team, to prepare students for the challenge, and to guide them throughout the process.


  • Understand competition logistics
  • Explore task requirements and team dynamics
  • Develop ethical approaches to guiding students in a competitive situation
  • Adapt documentation for each grade level/school

2. Designing a Student-Centered Tech Booth

The 2017 Tech Fair is an opportunity for schools to share with the community the exciting ways that technology is incorporated into teaching and learning in our classrooms. Each school is encouraged to showcase students and student work in their booth. Join with colleagues to share ideas and develop plans for student-centered tech fair booths.


  • Explore/review effective practices for developing a student-centered booth display
  • Brainstorm and share ideas with colleagues
  • Adapt documentation for each grade level/school
  • Develop plan for student and staff participation in 2017 Tech Fair

Google Essentials Series: Google Classroom, Part 1

Monday, January 9 from 4:00-5:00 @ Knox 308

Use the tools within Google Classroom to save time, engage students, stay organized, and improve communication. Participants in this class will learn to create assignments, announcements, and discussions. The workflow of electronic assignment submission and grading will be introduced, including the "behind the scenes" organization of assignments and class materials in Google Drive.

Google Essentials Series: Google Classroom, Part 2

Monday, January 23 from 4:00-5:00 @ Knox 308

Pre-requisite: Google Classroom 1 or equivalent skills

In this session, participants will apply the skills presented in the first session to create one or more lessons or activities for their students. There will be time devoted to deeper exploration of posting and sharing multiple types of content with students.

Google Certified Educator: Winter 2017 Cohort

First Course Meeting (Required): Wednesday, January 4, 4-5 PM, Knox 308

Check In and Support Lab: Wednesday, February 15, 4-5 PM, via Lab or Google Hangouts

Completion Deadline: Wednesday, March 29, EOB, submit documentation

This course is a blend of in-person and independent PD. By reading, watching videos, and completing activities, you’ll learn how to integrate Google in your classroom. In this self-paced, supported study series, you can start and stop lessons at any time; Google will track your progress through the course. At the end of this course, you'll be ready to take the exam to become a Google Certified Educator Level 1.
