Lingua Franca

n. A language used by people who do not speak a common tongue; usually combines aspects of different languages.

  1. When in a meeting we use English as a lingua franca because it is the only language we all know how to speak.
  2. When going to another country be sure to learn many universal languages as they might come in handy as a lingua franca between you and a native.
