CCC Students for October
For the month of October, these 4 students were selected from our class from a random draw of all the nominations made by myself and the class:
Daylee nominate for respect by a classmate
Evelyn nominated for respect by a classmate
Jackson T nominated for respect by a classmate
Ben nominated for respect by a classmate
There were quite a few nominations this month. Not only are your children showing great behavior but their peers are noticing this and nominating them.

Writing Workshop Enables Individualized Instruction
Workshop structure provides substantial time for whole group, small group and one-on-one instruction to students daily.Teachers plan strategic curriculum specific to the students in the room, moving students towards appropriate whole-group goals (standards) while simultaneously responding to individual needs. Much like an athletic coach considers, What does this player need to know for this Saturday’s game in order to play the best she can at thisstage of her development, workshop teachers strategically plan what to teach the whole class and what to teach each individual writer to enable him to produce the best text he can in each genre studied throughout the year. In writing workshop, all students can be successful—including the most advanced and most challenged students, two extremes often ill- served by other curriculums that teach to the median.

Library Volunteers
Library volunteers are needed to help with shelving and checking in books in our TCE Library. Volunteering in the library is fun and the schedule is flexible! If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Mrs. Hopper, TCE Librarian (lhopper@hse.k12.in.us).
*A safe visitor background check is required for all school volunteers. For more information on background checks, visit https://www.hseschools.org/services/other/school-safety/visiting-and-volunteering.

We Are Learning...
Reading
We continued talking about reading nonfiction works and how to tell if the information we are finding in these types of books are relevant or coming from a reliable source. We discussed that when we are researching a topic and writing down a note, it is a good practice to fact check the information we are receiving. If we find the same fact, or very similar fact, in two different sources then we can reasonably assume that we have the correct information.
Writing
This week in writing we worked on the finishing touches to some amazing nonfiction books. The students continued to edit and revise their works based on partner suggestions as well as help from mentor texts. Mentor texts have also encouraged and inspired the students to take some really strong risks with their writing like adding word searches, scrambled word puzzles, and even quizzes to their books.
This Friday, all of our works will be on display in our classroom as all of 2nd Grade will be participating in a Gallery Walk through all of our rooms. Students will spend time in each room reading and learning from all of our collective works!
Word Study
We finished the week talking about homophones. Homophones are words that sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings. Realizing these different words exist and how to spell each will be beneficial when we use them in our writing.
Math
This week in math we continued to work on subtraction with a focus on regrouping. This concept is always difficult but the students are working hard and appear to be understanding the concept. We finished the week talking about word problems and how we can figure out what a word problem is asking us to solve and discern whether we will use addition or subtraction or possibly both to solve the problem. This will be our main focus for the upcoming weeks as well as we will also introduce money into the equation as well.
Inquiry/Project Work
- A newscast that will include use of our Media Center's Green Screen Room
- Interactive online quiz
- A science experiment TV show (think Bill Nye the Science Guy)
- iMovie
- Digital presentation software.
The students have been thoughtful and creative with how they were going to share their information and I am getting so excited to see our final projects!
