They both recorded for the Region 18 Jazz Band and both gentlemen placed FIRST CHAIR on their instrument (Matthew on Alto Sax and Mike on Bass Guitar)! This is a huge achievement, as this region has some of the most competitive musicians in the state! Next step is recording for state in a few weeks. Wish them luck!

AISD Systems Status
Caregiver Meals Continue Through December
The City of Austin voted to continue providing meals to parents and caregivers through the end of December. To make this possible, an additional $1.5 million was granted to the AISD Crisis Support Fund. With these funds, the school district can partner with local restaurants to keep Austin fed. Restaurants include Easy Tiger, Henbit and Good Work Austin's L'oca d'Oro, Colleen's Kitchen, Contigo and Rosedale Kitchen and Bar.
Since May, restaurant partners have provided 582,662 meals for caregivers.
From Mr. Johns, Life Skills Teacher:
I am so proud of all my students and the progress they have made under the circumstances. One of his students in particular has made amazing progress with speech and self-help skills. She sits in her bedroom on zoom from 9:45 until 4pm with no direct adult support.
She fully participates in every group and has made great progress and is speaking in longer sentences with better articulation. In regards to her Self-help skills, she has learned to operate zoom on her own, unmute, turn on the camera etc. At lunch she makes herself a sandwich and when she is done eating, we will see her folding clothes until we get started after lunch. She has been able to take the self-help skills that she learned at school and apply them to her new situation. Her father works during the school day and mom works nights. She is able to do school and self-care with no direct adult support. Other than two days when the family was moving, she has not missed a day of school this year.
She is a virtual school superstar!
From Ms. Villarreal, Cosmetology Teacher:
All cosmo 1 and 2 got certified the first six weeks for OSHA Barbicide Covid… it's something they can add to their resumes.
From Ms. Snyder, College and Career Advisor:
Senior Samuel Zinn - National Merit Semi-Finalist (will find out about finalist standing in February)
From Ms. Garcia, Band Director:
One of our senior band students, Vanessa Marquez, received an amazing scholarship from Abilene Christian University. She received the John C Stevens Award for Academic Excellence at Abilene Christian University. She will be given $68,000 over four years and will be studying Criminology and Behavior to become a Criminal Profiler.
From Ms. Hanley-Roy, Students Organized for Anti-Racism (SOAR) Teacher:
Shout to almost ALL of our SOAR students who took time out of their evenings to attend the Texas Network of Youth Services (TNOYS) Youth and Young Adult Policy Listening Sessions. Students were asked to speak about "what policy issues affecting youth/young adults involved in the system are important and what changes you think would be most beneficial for you and other youth/young adults in similar circumstances." Many of our students attended panels focused on Race and the Black Youth Experience and the LGBTQIA+ Youth Community!
From Colin Bugge, Construction Teacher:
Morgan Dew came into the Construction Technology workshop on Friday to build benches to increase outdoor seating for students during outdoor lunches during COVID.
Kaden Dale for working on the athletic trainer's ramp, and having good ideas for designing a Social Visitation Booth for Alzheimer's Texas.
Kaleb Azis, for designing a picnic table in SketchUp and is halfway through building it at home all by himself.
