Big picture

The mission of Sioux Center Christian School is to disciple God’s children by equipping them with a knowledge and understanding of Christ and His creation so that they can obediently serve God and others as they work and play.

Every Student TREASURED, Every Student TRAINED, Every Student TRANSFORMED

FROM DR. B.

Happy Wednesday, Trailblazers!

It just showed up on my Twitter feed the other day. Apparently, spring is only 30 days away!

It’s been a bit of a long-haul kind of winter, right?

Even though the landscape remains snowy and cold outside the SCCS building, things inside are definitely moving and shaking. We are in the middle of a deep time of learning at school, a time when we really see student growth and development, a time when things start to “click”.

First graders are loving their animals unit. Students in PE have been enjoying ice skating. Third graders are demonstrating their artistic creativity through making butterflies. Fifth graders are having fun playing with language by learning about idioms. Eighth graders look forward to a learning day at the state capitol.

The love of learning is evident at our school, something for which I am very thankful. Students love learning, teachers love learning, and school leaders love seeing learning happening.

We praise God for the ability to grow and learn, and we’re so thankful we can do it at a Christian school that unapologetically holds fast to the Reformed Christian perspective.

Thank you for your support of our efforts.

Let’s keep at it!

6TH GRADE MEDIEVAL FEAST

Sixth graders celebrated their study of the Middle Ages in Mr. Breen's Social Studies class with a Medieval Feast! Students dressed as court jesters, knights, serfs, plus each class had a king, queen, lord, lady, nun, and priest, who sat at the head table. They enjoyed a medieval "meal" while entertainment was provided by jesters and musicians. Studying and "stepping into" history helps students see God's hand in His Story in various times and places!

Students who do not pass will be re-tested at school in 1 month. Parents of students who do not pass the second test will receive a letter in the mail from AEA with further recommendations. 4CARE

Do you have a child who will attend preschool next year? 4Care is an opportunity for children who attend half-day preschool to enjoy hands-on, child-led, play-based learning at SCCS on the half-day they are not in preschool.
Students may enroll in a morning or afternoon session, plus we offer a full-day Friday 4Care option.
You may reserve your child’s place in 4Care starting Thursday, February 23. Go to https://www.siouxcenterchristian.com/studentlife/4care.cfm

We have a great relationship with Stepping Stones Preschool! Their online registration opens Thursday, February 23 at 6:00pm.

T-SHIRT DONATIONS NEEDED

In March we will be focusing on the Throughline "Earth Keeper.” We need clean, used t-shirts for our March 8 upcycling connection group activity. If you have a t-shirt you no longer need and would like to donate, please bring it to the school office, or place it on Jill Friend’s desk in the orchestra room by March 3. Any sizes, colors or designs work, but if you happen to have a Storyline t-shirt from a previous year, we would love to repurpose it for you!

2023-24 SCHOOL CALENDAR

The calendar for the 2023-2024 school year is attached. Some notes:
  • We will host parent/teacher conferences again before school begins so that teachers and parents can start building relationships. This year, that will be on August 17, 2023 (the same night as registration).
  • The first day of school is August 23, 2023.
  • We will continue to release at 2:05 PM every Wednesday for professional development.
  • We continue to have the day before Thanksgiving off and 2 weeks (10 school days) at Christmas break to respect family time.
  • We continue to include professional development time next to vacation breaks as much as possible, rather than days off here and there, which we have heard is helpful for family schedules.
  • The last day of school is May 22, 2024 with graduation that evening.
  • We have 54 extra built in hours of school (about 8 days of school) than what we are required to have by the State of Iowa should we need to use them for snow days, late starts, etc.

We look forward to 23-24 at SCCS!

TALES AND TRAILS SUMMER CAMP

Registration is OPEN for our Tales and Trails Summer Camp 2023! This is an educational and fun summer opportunity for kids who are 5-11 years old by June 1, 2023.

This program is designed to be educational, fun, and infused with our Christian perspective.

Weekly camp themes encourage students to learn about the wonder of God’s creation through a variety of hands-on, fun activities. Outdoor play is also an important part of the camp experience, and kids are encouraged to stay active and engaged during their time at camp.

Information and registration forms were sent home with every child in 4Care – 4th grade.

SCCS families have the first opportunity to register! We will open registration to community members after March 1 (let your friends and neighbors know!)

TRAIL'RAISER FUNDRAISING EVENT 2023

The first Trail’Raiser Night fundraising event was held on April 11, 2015. Our new addition was still under construction and over 1,000 attendees enjoyed walking through the future music rooms, K-2nd classrooms, and office area. Plus, the gym filled to the brim for our first ever game show, the Family Feud. The event raised $110,000 for the new addition and an annual tradition was born!

We have had a total of eight Trail’Raiser Nights, alternating between auctions and game shows (Survivor in 2017, The Price is Right in 2019, Family Feud in 2022) and raising a total of $1.14 million through them!

Now approaching our 9th Trail’Raiser event, we are ready to try something a little different to help build the Blazer Center campus expansion. Our event this year is planned for Saturday, April 15, and will be a come and go event running from 9am – noon (note: Grandparents/Special friends Day is Friday, April 14).

We are renaming the event to Trail’Raiser Trek and attendees will walk a one-mile course near school and through school, ending with a delicious Blazer Brunch in the lunchroom. Before the event, businesses, supporters, parents and grandparents will have the opportunity to pledge a $.05 to $5 gift for every person who comes to the event. The more people who show up to walk, the more money we raise! If we reach our goal of $150 sponsored for each attendee and we have 1,000 attendees – that raises $150,000! If 1,250 people attend, $187,500 is raised. Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase cupcakes, bars, snack mixes, event t-shirts, plus some fun new things!

We’re still working on the details, but just wanted to give you a heads up so you can reserve the morning of SATURDAY, APRIL 15 for this event!
