Germain Pilon (:
1528-Feb. 3, 1590 Paris, France
Biography:
- Spent most of his life all around france.
- Though the early years where un accounted for, much of his training was in his fathers workshop.
- Despite the 16th century strife, Pilon did not seem troubled. He proceeded to rise steadily professionally, socially and financially; though it was said his work still did not fully cover the average restlesness of the time period.
- He was a sculptor creating many statues and things such as : the Deploring Virgin, the Resurrection Group, and the Tomb of Catherine of Medicis.
- He gained the supremacy from Catherin de Medicis, and her sons Francis II, Charles IX, and Henry III.
Some of His Works:
Monument for the Heart of King Henry II
- The Monument was commissioned in 1560.
- Today This peice is located in the Louvre in Paris, France as well as other peices of his.
- The peice is significant because in all of the artists that worked on the peice, Gerard Pilon recieved the lions share. THis opened him to never being without a royal project due to suiting the taste of Marie de Medicis so well. Pilon uses Pagan views rarely used at the time.
- This peice to me is interesting due to the audacity Pilon had to break the societal norms and create a wonderfully detailed and realistic veiw if humans the the beauty that is the natural appearance despite what at the time was accepted.
- Pilon shows Humanism/Realism in his sculpture of classicism of the Low Countries and England, and he shows Secularism in his very pagan like influences in work even on the Tomb of Henry II.
