Halloween Parade
At 11:15 a.m., our parade will begin. For the parade, we will meet all parents out on the playground. We will parade on the track directly behind the school.
If the weather is inclement, we will parade inside. If we have to do that, we ask that K-2 parents wait on the inside area of the large gym and grades 3-5 parents wait on the inside area of the cafeteria for us. We will walk along the perimeter of these rooms. Our halls are narrow; so if possible, please do not bring strollers on this day.
As in the past, we ask that parents car pool whenever possible. Weather permitting, our playground will be open for parking. If you must park on Woodbury, please park on the east side of the street only. Double parking along Woodbury makes it very challenging for buses and fire trucks to come down the street, and we also want to be good neighbors to the people that live along Woodbury.
Halloween Costume Reminders
Please remember to select costumes for school of a non-violent and wholesome nature. Accessories may not include toy weapons (guns, knives, swords, etc.) or fake blood. We also ask that you select costumes that do not include masks. Halloween is a busy day at Glengary. Our staff cannot apply face make up for children. Please also be sure to send your child's costume to school with them as they will change at school. Your cooperation and support is appreciated!
Teacher of the Year Nominations now through October 25th
The Walled Lake Consolidated School District believes that all teachers have a profound effect on the students whose lives they touch. In an effort to acknowledge the quality of our entire teaching staff we would like to publicly recognize some of our exemplary teachers. Therefore, we are actively involved in a District Teacher/Educator of the year recognition program, as well as the Oakland County Teacher of the Year and State of Michigan Teacher of the Year programs at each level (elementary, middle school and high school).
Please consider completing a Teacher of the Year Nomination using the attached nomination form: toy_nomination_form_19-20_-_fillable.pdf .
You can also view additional Teacher of the Year information on the district website linked here: Teacher of the Year link. Nominations are due this Friday, October 25th!

The Western Oakland County Parenting Education Fair is just around the corner. This opportunity will be taking place on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Walled Lake Northern High School. Registration is open and costs $15 per person or $25 at the door on the day of the event.
The Parenting Fair’s purpose is to educate, inform, and provide resources for parents and caregivers. We are very excited to have Brooks Gibbs joining us this year as our keynote speaker! Child care is available for a reasonable cost ($3 for one child, $5 per family) and includes entertainment and lunch. Message from Deputy Superintendant
Dear WLCSD Parents,
Ensuring a safe physical environment in our schools is paramount. With your support through bond approvals, over the last six years we have significantly upgraded our safety and security measures at all District schools and facilities. From swipe card entry technology to entry buzzer systems, secure vestibules, and thousands of surveillance cameras, we do everything we can to keep our students, staff, and visitors safe.
In addition to physical upgrades, our staff members train students, annually, on a variety of safety drills, including fire, tornado, lock-down, shelter-in-place, and evacuations. New for the 2019-2020 school year will be the introduction of ALICE safety protocols, which prepare for a violent-intruder event. ALICE is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. This nationally endorsed law enforcement best practice is a proactive, options-based strategy for encountering a violent intruder.
We are proud to have strong partnerships with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department as well as the following Police Departments: Novi, Walled Lake, West Bloomfield, White Lake, Wixom, Wolverine Lake, Orchard Lake, and Farmington. All nine of these law enforcement agencies have ALICE trained officers who will be assisting individual schools with educational sessions, staff and student training, and safety drill implementation.
We will be offering two parent sessions to learn more about ALICE:
- Elementary Schools -- Tuesday, October 29, 2019 @ Oakley Park Elementary – 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
- Middle & High Schools – Wednesday, October 30, 2019 @ Clifford Smart Middle School – 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
We encourage you to ask questions and share your thoughts by either attending one of our upcoming Parent Information Sessions or by providing feedback at our designated email: alice@wlcsd.org.
We recognize the sensitivity and deep emotions associated with this topic. Therefore, throughout the school year, both the District and individual schools will continue to communicate with the entire school community as we move forward together on this journey toward maximizing safety and preparedness at every facility in the District.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Gutman Chris Delgado
Superintendent of Schools Deputy Superintendent of Schools

Positivity Project
The character card which defines perspective and explains why it matters is attached below. I encourage you to print this card and use it as tool to reinforce the strength of perspective at home.
The Positivity Project defines perspective as “coming from truly listening to others when they talk and working to understand new points of view when reading books, listening to stories, or watching movies.”
Some ideas for families at home to support perspective:
1. Ask your child open-ended questions that support taking another’s perspective in texts, commercials, conversations during home routines (bedtime, at dinner for example: “how might that make your sister, your brother, grandma/grandpa feel?)”
2.Talk to your child about someone in their life who uses perspective (often this is someone who is viewed as wise. Ex: a family member, or a person lots of people seek a lot of advice from).
Individuals with this strength may show:
• I am aware of my own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
• Self-awareness is important to me. I am able to accurately articulate my strengths and weaknesses.
• I have the ability to identify and analyze larger patterns.
• Friends, family members, or coworkers often seek my advice.
• It is important to consider all sides’ needs, thoughts, and opinions before acting.
3. Read Stories about perspective-Below are a few titles of children's books that promote perspective with some great questions you can ask your child to promote discussion about this important character strength.

Creativity
Next week, students will learn about Creativity.
The character card which defines perspective and explains why it matters is attached below. I encourage you to print this card and use it as tool to reinforce the strength of creativity at home.
The Positivity Project defines creativity as “a process that takes courage. Anytime you share your original ideas with the world, you risk being criticized or even ostracized. Positive psychology breaks creativity into two components: First, he/she must produce original ideas or behaviors. Second, the original idea or behavior must make a positive contribution to that person’s life or the lives of others.”
Some ideas for families at home to support creativity:
1. Ask your child open-ended questions that support taking creativity in texts, commercials, conversations during home routines (bedtime, at dinner for example: “what does that make you think of?” Look at clouds, or drawings, color together, or ask them about what they’re learning/doing in art class this week?)
2. Help support your child’s creativity
Designate a space for creating. ...
Keep it simple. ...
Allow for “free time.” ...
Help your kids activate their senses. ...
Discuss creativity. ...
Cultivate creative critical thinking. ...
Avoid managing. ...
Help kids pursue their passions
3. Read Stories about creativity-Below are a few titles of children's books that promote creativity with some great questions you can ask your child to promote discussion about this important character strength.

Volunteer Opportunities
1. The Glengary PTA is looking for someone to become our Legislative Representative. Responsibilities would include attending the a Parent Advocacy Meeting on 10/28 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Dublin Elementary School to learn more about this role. Each school is asked to fill this position and have a representative at the meeting. For now, the main purpose would be to learn what is happening with education at the State level and communicate back to the PTA. Please contact Amy Fry if you are interested amy.e.fry@hotmail.com
2. Glengary is also looking for a few parent volunteers to help supervise students standing outside in the mornings before school begins. This volunteer opportunity is for someone who would be consistent each week through the school year (ex: every Monday or every Tuesday until the end of the year). Responsibilities would include arriving by 8:45 to stand outside near the flagpole to help ensure student safety as students are getting released from parents through the carpool line and gathering at the outside door waiting for the bell to ring.
