Ms. Odom's Classes McKinney High School 2015-16
Week Ending 2/5/16
I apologize for no flyer last week. I was out with a severe case of bronchitis most of the week so this newsletter will include highlights for the past two weeks.
If you are having issues with Canvas logins, please let me know. You are automatically an observer for your student's class(es). You can visit the site by clicking this link: https://canvas.mckinneyisd.net/ Your login information is the same as your HAC login. If you do not have your login, you may contact your student's House Principal secretary.
Please check your student's grades frequently. Please encourage them to make sure they've turned in their assignments on time. I'll be contacting parents by phone and/or email this week because of some concerns with your student's performance. We can work together to resolve some issues before they become serious!

Fashion Marketing
We've started our Marketing unit after exploring different types of businesses and functions involved in every type of business.
We're learning about the 4 P's of marketing and how to segment the market using demographics, geographic and psychographics. We're going to segment the 'market' at McKinney High School to see how many different ways we can segment our market.
We had to postpone our first summative test over fashion terms and history for Monday. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.
Money Matters
We've finished our basic introduction to banking accounts and writing checks and reconciling a bank statement.
We postponed our first major summative assessment over basic economics and consumer economics until Tuesday! I'm expecting wonderful scores. Please encourage your student to review notes in preparation. Ten minutes every night beats cramming the night before!
We've begun looking at government involvement in our personal finances and will look at the government as provider, regulator, and supporter of business, consumer, and protector. Then we'll look a little closer at taxes, where our money goes, and how to prepare taxes.
Entrepreneurship
Our first part of the business plan should have been turned in on Friday, 2/5. This was a summative grade. Students not turning in will have the opportunity to resubmit once the retake opportunity is posted. We've been doing some intense research so this next week, we're going to flex our creative muscles and design our logo, letterhead, and business cards.
I'm seeing a problem developing in the class and need your assistance in resolving the issue. Several students have chosen to play games and visit unauthorized websites instead of utilizing their class time to complete these projects. I've blocked as many as possible, but unfortunately, the time frame for accomplishing some of the tasks will have closed. Students who don't utilize class time effectively get further and further behind and run the risk of not finishing this major project. Since we don't have a lot of multiple choice tests, these projects are crucial for success in writing their business plan. Each section of their business plan is listed on a main content page with links to each of the assignments. It is accessible 24/7 so there's no reason the assignments are not turned in on time. I'll be contacting parents of my 'heavy hitters' to discuss a plan and consequences for off task behavior. Typically I award a detention for off task behavior where students will make up the work they've missed.
Thank you for your support in my efforts to help your student become college and/or career ready!
