Superintendent's Update
July 8, 2020
Dear MUSD Staff and Parent Community,
In all circumstances, I believe in timely, honest, and transparent communication. With that intention, and with very mixed emotions, I am writing to inform you that I have accepted a new position as the Superintendent of the Fremont Unified School District. This evening, July 8th, my appointment was finalized by the Fremont Unified School District Board of Education. While I am incredibly excited and humbled by this new opportunity, my heart is full of love for MUSD and my emotions are heavy about leaving our students, staff, and community.
At their core, MUSD and Fremont Unified share the characteristics of an excellent staff, incredibly talented students, and a supportive and involved community. The opportunity to serve Fremont Unified, including their 42 schools, and over 35,000 students, is a tremendous privilege and an exciting new challenge.
Over the past 13 years, I poured my heart and soul into MUSD across numerous positions, but especially during the last four years as Superintendent. I am confident my passion and commitment to providing the best education for students created meaningful improvements for MUSD. While I am sad to leave MUSD, I look forward to serving Fremont Unified with the same passion and sharp focus on student success.
None of the improvements created in MUSD are solely the result of my work. Our best work is always shared work. The incredible team of educators, support staff, and administrators in MUSD will always have the greatest impact on our students. Throughout the last 13 years, it has been a true honor to work side by side with so many of you.
It is anticipated that I will start my new role in Fremont Unified on or around August 1st. I recognize that in the midst of our current circumstances strong leadership is imperative. I want to assure our staff and community that prior to my departure, I will complete the full development of our reopening plans and carry forward the work of our Task Force.
As stated in earlier communications, our draft comprehensive plans will be presented to our Board of Education for review and discussion on July 13th during a Special Meeting of the Board. On July 20th, our Board of Education will meet in another Special Meeting to make final decisions about how MUSD will begin the 2020-2021 school year. Throughout these meetings and the continued refinement of plans, I am committed to the successful completion of this work.
Our Board of Education has a deep commitment to providing the best for MUSD students and staff. It has been an honor and privilege to work closely with them as a governance team. I am confident that through their leadership and the excellent work of our educators, support staff, and administrators, MUSD will continue to be successful in both the short term and long term.
Board President, Jonathan Wright, would like to share the following thoughts with our staff and community: “Superintendent Cammack is an integral part of the Martinez community. He has devoted himself, heart and soul, to the needs of our students and staff. He has performed yeoman's work to ensure our budgets have remained balanced in spite of reduced funding and growing unfunded liabilities. Under his leadership, Martinez has led the way in addressing student safety and equity. CJ is our collective mentor, colleague, and friend. Although we are saddened by his departure we are grateful for everything he has done to make Martinez Unified the inclusive and forward-thinking district that it is. It will be difficult to replace him but we look forward to the opportunity to identify new leadership for our district. Thank you, CJ. You are leaving Martinez in better shape than you found it.”
In closing, I would like to reiterate my gratitude for the opportunities I have been provided to serve the students, staff, and community of Martinez Unified. I only know one way to do this work - with an unbridled passion for student success and a focus on building meaningful relationships. If that work is done successfully, it makes a world of difference - it also makes leaving very difficult.
The future of MUSD is very bright, each of one of you will be the biggest reasons our students and schools remain successful. I am confident that any person who fills my shoes will quickly identify the multitude of reasons I love MUSD, most especially the people.
With gratitude,
CJ Cammack, Superintendent
