Mission Statement
Happy New Year and Welcome Back!
News from the Principal
I am happy to announce that St. John Nepomuk Catholic School has been awarded the Oklahoma Certified Healthy School for 2018-2019! This is our second time to earn this award. There are three levels of certification: Basic, Merit and Excellence. St. John Nepomuk earned the Excellence certification. Way to go FALCONS!!!
What is the Certified Healthy Oklahoma Program?
The Certified Healthy Oklahoma Program is a free, voluntary statewide certification. The certification showcases businesses, campuses, communities, congregations, early childhood programs, restaurants, and schools that are committed to supporting healthy choices through environmental and policy change. These entities working to improve the health of Oklahomans by implementing elements, policies, and programs that will help Oklahomans to eat better, move more, and be tobacco free.
The Certified Healthy Oklahoma Program began in 2003 as a collaborative initiative with four founding partners – the Oklahoma Turning Point Council, the Oklahoma Academy for State Goals, the Oklahoma State Chamber, and the Oklahoma State Department of Health.
Oklahomans have a shared vision of creating healthier places to live, work, learn, play, and pray. As a result of this vision, seven Certified Healthy Oklahoma Programs are challenging all Oklahomans to eat better, move more, and be tobacco free, as well as implement policies to create healthy environments throughout our state.
The Certified Healthy Oklahoma Program includes the following categories: Business, Campus, Community, Congregation, Early Childhood Program, Restaurant, and School. You can help shape current and future generations by becoming a Certified Healthy place to live, work, learn, play, and pray.

Bring A Friend to School Day
On Monday, January 21, we will host “Bring a Friend to School Day”, an opportunity for your child to ask a same-grade neighbor, friend, parishioner, or relative to join us for a regular school day. (This is a student holiday/teacher planning day for many of our public school counterparts) We know this will provide an excellent opportunity for their friends to see for themselves what school at SJN is like.
Have the parents of your child’s neighborhood friends or teammates ever asked you, “What is St. John like?” or “What makes your school so special?” Well, here is a simple way to have their children see firsthand who we are and what it is like to be a St. John Falcon.
We are inviting students in grades two through six to bring a friend to school on January 21st. Visitors will follow a typical school schedule, attending both general and specialty classes with their SJN friend. Teachers will take time to introduce visitors in each class as well as to emphasize the importance of friendship and community whenever appropriate. We expect visitors to abide by our school rules. Policies regarding the use of mobile devices will be in enforced. Visiting students are not required to wear the school uniform, but they are required to wear appropriate clothing that would be acceptable on Free Dress Day.
A registration form is available here. Forms must be completed and signed by you and the parent/guardian of your child’s friend and returned to the school office no later than Thursday, January 11th.Please note that this is a firm date. It is important for us to know how many guests to expect, and to be certain that we have parental permission and contact information. You will receive an email confirmation advising you that your child (or child’s friend) may attend.
We know that many of our applicants for admission are a direct result of the enthusiasm our current families have for SJN. We also know that our students are our best ambassadors and we encourage them to do everything they can to send positive messages about SJN to our guests.
If you have any questions regarding Bring a Friend to School Day, please contact Natalie Johnson at njohnson@sjnok.org. Thank you in advance for helping us make this a special day of friendship and learning for our students and their friends.
Sincerely,
Natalie Johnson

Helpful Information from the CDC on Flu Prevention
The single most effective way to prevent the flu is with immunization. CDC still recommends one taking the vaccine even now. There are additional ways to assist in not spreading the flu.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are
- Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. This will help prevent spreading your illness to others.
Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when
coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
Clean your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If
soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be
physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Play Like a Champion Today Coaches Clinic
Play Like a Champion Today provides leadership in an effort to renew the culture of youth sport. It does this by educating ethically responsible sport leaders. These coaches, parents, and athletic administrators in turn will reach millions of young people. Crafted by leaders in the fields of sports psychology, coaching education, Catholic theology, and moral development, Play Like a Champion Today is centered around the principles of justice, tolerance, respect & solidarity. The program is supported by research on character development & faith formation in sports. From it's origins at the University of Notre Dame to collaboration across the country. Play Like a Champion is designed to bring the best athlete-centered practices to your community.
Play Like a Champion Today deals with tough sport issues and supports schools by promoting:
- Sports Building Character in Athletes & Families
- Building Teams as Moral Communities
- Champion-Centered Best Coaching Practices
- Sportsmanship
- Responsible Decision-Making
- The Spirituality of Sport
- The GROW Approach to Athlete Motivation
The CGSAA requires that all coaches attend the PLACT training. There will be two designated PLACT training dates scheduled each year with the intent to offer them corresponding with the two primary seasons of sports annually within the CGSAA. The fall training will be conducted by PLACT Master Trainers from Notre Dame. Subsequent trainings will be led by local certified trainers trained by the PLACT Master Trainers from Notre Dame. Documentation of the date of the completed PLACT training will be recorded in the online database that is used to track completion of the Safe Environment training.
ALL returning coaches (head) from the 2017-18 school year for Volleyball, Soccer and Basketball must have completed the training prior to the beginning of their sport’s season to be eligible as a coach for the 2018-2019 school year and subsequent school years. As new coaches volunteer, they will have until prior to their next season of coaching to complete the training. In theory, coaches have one year to complete the PLACT training requirement in order to remain coaching. All interested coaches not currently coaching are strongly encouraged to attend this training.
Coaches who receive infraction cards or technical fouls in the sport they coach, will be reviewed each season by the school principal, athletic director, CGSAA school representative, (and CGSAA officers as needed) to determine what actions to be taken and the coaching eligibility for future seasons.
The Catholic Grade School Athletic Association (CGSAA) of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City believes that by participating in this training and implementing both what is learned in the session and what is contained in the associated manual, coaches will be empowered in their effectiveness beyond the technical aspects of sports, enhancing their ability to create and maintain the positive environment that will GROW their youth participants.

Commitment to a Safe Environment
The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City through its programs, organizations and events, has numerous daily contacts with many children and young people. It is, therefore, important that all Archdiocesan Personnel, clergy, seminarians, religious, employees and volunteers, protect the rights of children and be alert to the possibility for child abuse. Under Oklahoma State law, all individuals MUST report an incident or suspicion of sexual abuse of a minor (person under 18 years of age) to the civil authorities. The Oklahoma Department of Human Services has established a statewide abuse reporting hotline for reporting: 1-800-522-3511. This number is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you feel a child is in immediate danger of harm call 911. For the safety of children and the healing of victims, the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City provides an Abuse of Minors Pastoral Response Hotline for reporting the abuse of a minor (in the past or presently) by a member of the clergy or other church personnel: 1-405-720-9878. The Archdiocesan Victims Assistance Coordinator, a licensed professional counselor, will respond to calls to the Archdiocesan Pastoral Response Hotline. A report to the Archdiocese does not relieve the individual of the duty to report child abuse to civil authorities as required by Oklahoma State Law. In Oklahoma, failure to report child abuse is a misdemeanor punishable in law.
