Kendrick Lamar Duckworth grew up in the streets of Compton, CA, where he was a quiet student who was in the midst, but avoided Compton's gang life. When he first started high school, Lamar was baffled to see how the houses of his classmates who were bussed 30 miles to Centennial High School were. They had family pictures and lived life much different than what Kendrick's life has been up to this point. This influenced him to name his highly anticipated album good kid, m.A.A.d city, the follow up to two mixtapes highly acclaimed by many. As a teen, he started acting like the same ways he grew up learning, parties and drinking. His dad, told him at 16 that he does not want Kendrick to be the same as him. This and other influences helped him change his life around before releasing mixtapes, albums, including his award winning album To Pimp a Butterfly, winning rap album of year at the 58th Grammys.
Training/education (How he started to work in the Performing Arts field).
Lamar had no formal training from a music school but went to Centennial High School for his education. Lamar started to rap after the success of 50 Cent's mixtape before he started rapping and signed a deal with Doctor Dre and his label in 2012 where his first song he worked with him on was "Compton".
Major Roles, albums, and shows
He is considered by many to be one of the rappers to revive rap. He has released 5 mixtapes and two albums getting most popularity after his 2012 album with Dre, good kid, m.A.A.d city. He had a lot of anticipation building on his 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly and delivered in an incredible manner by winning rap album of the year at the 58th Grammys. One of his most powerful performance was also at the 58th Grammys when performing, "The Blacker the Berry," and "Alright," in which he showed how powerful his craft really is.
Kendrick was influenced by many people in his career, a few are: Tupac Shakur, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Nas. He still looks up to them today, even though some of them have stopped rapping.
Kendrick Lamar has won 39 awards, and has had 106 nominations, including a Grammy leading 11 this year at the 58th Grammys. Some of his major awards are: rap album of the year (2016), best music video (2016), best rap song (2016), best rap/sung collaboration (2016), and best rap performance (2016).
