LWISD Objectives
Why Do We Post 4-Part Objectives?
LWISD uses a 4-Part Learning Objective in every classroom, every day. Elementary classrooms have a targeted learning objective for each of the core subjects each day. Our learning objectives outline what a student will be able to do as well as how we will know if a student is able to do it--which is why we have four parts.
What should the objective do?
•The objective addresses a single day of instruction.
•The objective is written in concrete language.
•The objective is written in student-friendly language.
•The objective communicates a clear focus to the student(s).
Why an Objective is Important . . .
The objective does what Sean Cain states as “provides a filter that is focused on the critical learning for the day.” It allows students with weaker mental filters (lack of prior knowledge, prior experience, prior academic success, motivation) to focus and process information effectively for longer periods of time.
•The objective allows students and teachers to remember the original intent and the priority of the lesson.
“ . . . Instruction should be objective-based as opposed to activity-based. All too often, instruction in the classroom can be likened to a stringing together of activities. After the activity is chosen (or sometimes even taught!), the teacher may try to match it to an objective in the curriculum guide to justify the use of the activity. There are many reasons why the stringing together of activities is not the best way to approach instruction. It sometimes lends itself to a “hit or miss” approach to teaching and can disjoint and fragment learning. Sometimes the activity may have learning goals and objectives that are not aligned to curriculum or assessments.
Objective-based instruction requires teachers to set learning goals and objectives prior to instruction. After the learning objective has been been clearly established and stated in measurable, behavioral terms, the teacher then selects those activities and learning experiences that are congruent to and support the intended objective.
