Don't Miss This Opportunity

Thanks to the 50+ teachers who have already signed up for JGB training! For those of you who have not received formal training, this is the time. JGB training is all about inquiry. Students come to their own understanding of a text, not to a teacher's predetermined answer. Kids learn to back yo' smack using evidence from the text. Most high ability programs include shared-inquiry discussions of Junior Great Books stories and other texts.

Economics in Elementary Classrooms

Two workshop invitations were sent out last week, one for Teaching Economics Using Children's Literature Workshop (1/19/16 4:15-5:30 pm): teachers K-5, and another for Economics and Entrepreneurship: Operating a Business Classroom in Grades 3-5 Workshop (1/20/16 4:15-5:30 pm).

Both workshops are free and provide instructional materials. What a great way to teach across disciplines. Space is limited so sign up soon.

November High Ability Meeting

Ask your high ability coordinator for more details about this month's Coordinator Meeting agenda:

  • Participated in a diversity questioning value line activity. Value lines are a great way to involve students in messy learning, learning where the questions and answers aren't necessarily clear cut.
  • Discussed ways to meet the needs of twice exceptional students
  • Intermediates: Reviewed cluster placements and documentation
  • Grades 1-4: Promote Junior Great Books training and economics workshops in buildings

Teachers who love using student-created signpost questions for fiction discussions can now do the same with nonfiction texts. I'll be glad to model nonfiction signpost questions in your classrooms starting in January.
