PLTW

5th grade PLTW Launch students have been working with VEX IQ Robots to test different input and output devices like controllers, motors, color sensors, touch LED sensors, and bumper switches. While collecting test data and recording it in their PLTW launch logs, each student learned that robots and humans use inputs and outputs to react to the outside world!

1st Graders visit The Challenger Center at the MiSci Museum thanks to a grant from The Dockstader Trust!

On January 20th and 21st the 1st grade was able to make a trip to The Challenger Center at miSci Museum in Schenectady. The Challenger Center is one of 43 such centers in the world. It is a simulator of NASA’s Mission Control and The International Space Station (ISS). While at The Challenger Center, half of each class did STEM activities in the briefing room. In one activity, students built a lander that would keep 2 astronauts (marshmallows) safe when dropped from 3 feet. The other half of the class traveled in a rocket which docked with the ISS. Once docked the students went through an airlock and then boarded the ISS. While on board the ISS the students weighed and attached parts of a probe that would be launched into a comet, worked with coordinate grids, described the attributes of space rocks and other STEM activities. After an hour the groups switched so everyone had the same experiences.

This incredible experience has left a lasting impression on our students. When we got back to the classroom, the students had many questions and ideas to discuss. They now want to know more about space, stars, comets, and what they must do to become engineers and astronauts.

A special thank you to The Dockstader Charitable Trust for making this trip possible.
