Close Reading and Annotation
Gradual Release of Responsibility
What does it mean to "read closely"?
Think about close reading as a conversation between the reader and the text.
During the conversation the reader ...
- formulates questions and thoughts
- makes connections to prior knowledge
- identifies important details and unfamiliar vocabulary
- examines the author's craft
- revisits the text
and finally develops a new understanding (synthesis).
