MARY ELIZA MAHONEY WAS BORN ON MAY 7,1845 SHE LATER DIED ON JANUARY 4 1926 MARY WAS THE FIRST BLACK AFRICAN AMERICAN TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL NURSE

SHE WAS BORN IN DORCHESTER BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS SHE WAS ADMITTED TO THE NURSING SCHOOL OF THE NEW ENGLAND HOSPITAL AND BECAME THE FIRST BLACK WOMAN TO COMPLETE NURSE TRAINING IN 1879 MARY WAS LATER ON INDUCTED INTO THE NURSING HALL OF FAME AND NATIONAL WOMEN HALL OF FAME SHE HAD LATER CO-FOUNDED NACGN(NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COLORED GRADUATE NURSES) AND WAS FORMALLY A MEMBER OF ANA (AMERICAN NURSES ASSOCIATION SHE HAD BEEN CREDITED AS ONE OF THE FIRST WOMEN TO REGISTER TO VOTE IN THE EARLY 1990S SHE RELOCATED TO LONG ISLAND NEW YORK WHERE SHE BECAME A SUPERVISOR OF THE HOWARD ASYLUM FOR BLACK CHILDREN
