Principal's Post

Dear Angell Community,
Please enjoy our featured article on organization by Mrs. Chudler and Mrs. Greager.
Organization is the ability to establish and maintain a way of arranging and keeping track of important things. It saves time when we know where things are and when we know what we need to accomplish a task. Even in my own home, I feel much calmer and less stressed when everything is in its place than when I have piles of stuff everywhere. The same is true for our children. We have talked about predictability and routine with other executive function skills and these are just as important when it comes to organization.
According to Peg Dawson and Richard Guare (240), the following are some expectations of organization at different age levels.
TK/Kindergarten
Hangs up coat in the right place, with or without a reminder
Puts toys away in the proper place with reminders
Clears their own dishes after a meal or snack, with or without a reminder
Grades 1-3
Puts coat, backpack, sporting equipment, etc. in the right places
Has homes for specific items in their room (e.g. books go on the bookshelf, toys go in the toy bin, crayons go in a desk drawer)
Keeps track of permission slips and notes coming home from school
Grades 4-5
Puts belongings in the right place around the house
Cleans up outside toys at the end of the day, with or without reminders
Keeps track of homework materials and assignments
What are some ways we can help support our children while building their organizational skills?
Put a system in place. Assign homes for their belongings to encourage organization. Routines are also helpful ways to stay organized. Whether it’s a homework routine or a set time to practice a musical instrument, clear expectations and organization are helpful ways to keep students accountable and responsible for their belongings.
Provide supervision. While we want our children to complete tasks independently they still need our oversight. Helping your child clean up their toys allows them to better understand the expectations and know where everything belongs. Consider taking a photograph of the organized space children can reference.
Start small. We want everyone to be successful, so start by organizing one highly visible space. Your children will be more invested in the process if they help you choose an area to focus on.

Organization Activities:
Certain chores, such as unloading the dishwasher and putting away laundry, are great ways to build organizational skills.
Card games such as Uno, Crazy 8’s, and Rummy also help develop these skills as children work to organize the cards in their hand.
Collections are a fun way to practice organizing, just think about all the fun things your children can collect this summer! Rocks and shells, stamps and coins, even Pokemon cards can be sorted in different ways.

TALENT SHOW UPDATE - MARK YOUR CALENDARS
Angell Idol is ready for an audience. Our entire community is welcome to attend on Friday, May 26th. The show will take place on the blacktop area located by the playground. The show will begin at 1:00 pm. Guests are welcome and encouraged to bring chairs. Please note that guests will not check into the office. All guests will report directly to the blacktop area. You are welcome to send you child in with a towel to sit on as all students will sit closest to the stage (located near the bike rack) in the blacktop area. The show will not be shown live on facebook due to copyright issues with pre-recorded songs. We will send out more information as Friday approaches. I cannot wait to see all of our talented Angell Fish.
ONE FINAL NOTE . . . . Please enjoy pictures of our first outdoor lunch with 4th and 5th graders. Each day the schedule rotates so that every grade has opportunities to eat outside. It is evident in the photos that our students enjoyed this new location. Thank you to our PTA for purchasing the picnic tables last year.
