Learning with Mrs. Ackenbom's Littles
This week was short and sweet with our snow days....but full of learning and fun! Check out this week's newsletter to see some of the things we accomplished together. :}
Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
After our holiday off school, Mrs. Ackenbom's Littles will learn more about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he was such a brave American. We will continue our diversity lessons and discuss respecting others even when they are different from us. We have a policeman visiting our classroom this coming Thursday afternoon to share with us how our police force keeps us safe and what they do to help in our community.
PALs and Fountas & Pinnell Reading Testing - Next Week!
We are completing PALs and F & P reading tests this coming week. Early literacy screening is the key to providing effective literacy instruction and preventing future reading problems. Both Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) and F & P provide a comprehensive assessment of young children's knowledge of the important literacy fundamentals that are predictive of future reading success. PALS is the state-provided screening tool for Virginia's Early Intervention Reading Initiative and is used by 99% of school divisions in the state on a voluntary basis. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this new information! The PALS and the Fountas and Pinnell websites, linked below, gives parents monthly tips and activities to do at home to boost reading skills.
Lovin' Literacy!
Magnificent Math
We love math time in Room 2! This week we discussed the number 50 in relation to other numbers and ways to count to 50 by ones, fives and tens and worked on ST Math with the iPads. We also spent time combining and subtracting numbers and making our own clocks. We had a blast this short week learning more about numbers and working with one another!
History/Social Science - Past vs. Present
We learned so much this short week while investigating the past vs. the present. We are starting to share our life time lines and discuss what we've enjoyed doing in the past at school. Next week, our class will discuss what we want to learn and achieve as we move into 2017 full "STEAM" ahead with our STEAM lessons each Friday. For the remainder of this month, we read how people long ago made coats for winter during war time when materials were scarce and how families made whipped cream 300 years ago, 200 years ago, 100 years ago and today. Ms. White, the gifted teacher, will share with us her collection of whisks and egg beaters. Some are as old as the 1800's and we all try to spin each one. We will even make our own whipped cream! It's going to be an awesome year ahead!
Winter in Virginia - Sharing What We Know!
Here we are drawing the fun things we did over our snow days. The kiddos shared that they had so much fun playing in the snow and some even had snow ball fights!
