CLINIC NEWS FROM NURSE LIZ:
FALL IS HERE! IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR FLU SHOT!
Cooler temperatures, leaves on the tree’s changing to vibrant colors signify fall has arrived. The arrival of fall also means that is it time to get your yearly flu vaccine. The AAP recommends that all children ages 6 months and older be immunized against influenza. Parents should get their children vaccinated as soon as the vaccine is available in their area. The FSSD will be partnering with the Williamson County Health Department, offering Flu shots to students at an undetermined future date. Watch for info coming home with your child regarding this.
HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS
· Stay in groups.
· Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help see and others see you.
· Eat only commercially wrapped treats. Do not eat opened candy.
· Always test makeup, to ensure no sensitivity or allergy.
· Lower your risk of eye injuries or infections by not wearing decorative contact lenses.
· Always look both ways before crossing the street.
A SAFE HALLOWEEN IS A HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER:
Middle school aged children who feel good about themselves have an advantage during the tween and teen years. They are less dependent on impressing others, and they tend to face challenges with confidence. Here are some ways to build self-esteem in your child:
Be realistic. Many middle schoolers' view of themselves (outgoing or shy, artsy or athletic) is based on where they fit in among their peers. Instead of comparing them to others, encourage them to recognize their strengths and pursue them.
Choose friends wisely. Encourage your child to spend time with people who build them up and avoid those who put them down.
Help Others. Making a difference in another person’s life can boost your child's self-confidence. They will take pride in being a leader and a role model. Suggest that they become involved in after school activities or volunteer with a community organization.

GRADE LEVEL NEWS:
5TH GRADE NEWS:
The 5th grade has had a great start to the school year! One highlight was our field trip to Nashville Children’s Theater in September. After reading the novel The Hundred Dresses in Language Arts class, students had a chance to see a live performance of this book. Students really enjoyed the show and were great audience members. After returning, we have been comparing and contrasting the novel and the play. This novel has a timeless theme of having courage to stand up to bullies and caring for others.
In addition, students have enjoyed studying cells and photosynthesis in Science and even got to chat with a guest scientist who works with cells each day in her research. In Social Studies, they have been studying the antebellum period in anticipation of their major unit of study on the American Civil War.
6TH GRADE NEWS:
Chromebooks in the hands of sixth graders are getting a great workout. Students are learning using apps like Padlet that show immediate responses and get immediate feedback. They request games like Prodigy that hone and reinforce math skills. Reading and math programs like IReady, Readlive and Imagine Learning are used on a daily basis to reinforce learning in the classroom. Each teacher has assignments loaded in Google Classroom so that students can turn in work online. In Science and Social Studies, students are researching information on school approved websites. Quizlet allows students to study, review and take quizzes online. Sixth grade has gone “high tech.”
7TH GRADE NEWS:
8TH GRADE NEWS:
Eighth grade made some splashing discoveries this month! Although some of us step on the scales more than others, 8th graders realized that finding their density was much more fun than finding their weight by stepping onto a scale! In the picture, Mr. Reimer's 8th graders measured displacement leading them to finding their density. No more using the force of gravity on our bodies to determine weight; from now on, using a container filled with water to find our density is the way to go!

Art Club
I am so excited to continue Art Club here at PGMS for the 2017-2018 school year!
Art club provides 7th and 8th graders artistic opportunities beyond the walls of the classroom. It also provides an opportunity for students to connect with other like-minded artists in a creative community. Art club members are expected to have a high regard for participation, creativity, craftsmanship and art advocacy. Meetings will typically take place once or twice a month on specific Mondays. Meetings start at 2:45 and end at 4:00. Reminders or changes to the schedule will be sent out through morning announcements.
I look forward to an awesome year with our PGMS artists!

PBS LOCK-IN:
This year's PBS lock-in was a great success. We had 172 students attend and were able to raise $3300 to fund PBS activities, assemblies, and prizes throughout the year. Our new glow room was a bit hit, as well as the Nerf War room and the jail. Thanks to all who helped to make this night such fun!
