Watch D.O.G.S. Information
WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative father involvement and community engagement educational initiative with two main goals:
- To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important and through their service demonstrating how to be a community contributor.
- To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.
As a result, the school gains an extra set of eyes and ears. The presence of a father or father figure will provide an additional positive role model, enhance a sense of security in the building, and will help to create an environment conducive to learning. Fathers get a glimpse of their students’ everyday world and learn about the increasingly complex challenges and decisions today’s youth are facing. As a result, they can learn to relate better to their students and hopefully connect with them. Fathers gain a greater awareness of the positive impact they can have on their student’s life in three critical areas including: academic performance, self-esteem, social behavior.
Who are WatchDOGS and how does WATCH D.O.G.S. work?
WATCH D.O.G.S invites fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other father figures to volunteer for a half-day at Steeple Run during the school year. Fathers and father figures will sign up to volunteer using SignUpGenius on Sunday 13th of October through the link provided in the email communication. The program is overseen by parent volunteers who partners with the school administrator to coordinate scheduling and identify opportunities for WatchDOGS to provide assistance at the school. WatchDOG dads and volunteers perform a variety of tasks during their volunteer day including monitoring the school entrance, assisting with unloading and loading of buses and cars, monitoring the lunch room, or helping in the classroom with a teacher’s guidance by working with small groups of students on homework, flashcards, or spelling.
What do WatchDOGS do (while they are at school)?
During the day, WatchDOGS may read and work with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, patrol the school hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well.
On the day of their participation, WatchDOG dads are given a brief review of their involvement and they wear an official WATCH D.O.G.S. t-shirt identifying them as a WatchDOG.
Examples of activities include:
- ENCOURAGE STUDENTS! (with lots of smiles and high fives, etc.)
- Help with the traffic flow of vehicles and students at arrival and dismissal times
- Assist at lunch
- Assist at recess, play or referee on the playground or in the gym
- Read with classes or tutor small groups of students
- Support fine specials (i.e. art, music, LC, etc.) with your presence

4th Grade Girl Scout Troop 55144 Pop Tab CHALLENGE!
This school year Troop 55144 will be collecting pop tabs to benefit Ronald McDonald Houses of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana (RMHC-CNI) and would like the support of Steeple Run to help collect as many as possible. You can help their efforts by donating the tabs you pull to open soda, soup and other aluminum cans. The funds generated from their Pop Tab Program help support RMHC-CNI programs.
Please send pop tabs to school with your child or drop them off at the receptacle located at the entrance. We will keep everyone updated on our collection efforts. Thank you in advance.
If you have any questions, please contact Cheryl Morgan at cheryll_smith@hotmail.com
HR Imaging will be returning to Steeple Run on Thursday, October 17th to photograph the students who were absent on September 4th or those desiring retakes, along with any new students.
Hopefully this will answer a few questions regarding picture retakes:
If a student did not have their picture taken on September 4th, for any reason (i.e.; absence; new student) they must have their picture taken for the classroom composite and ID. A portrait order envelope will be sent home prior to October 17th. This envelope MUST be completed and sent with the child on October 17th to place an order for pictures.
If you would like your child’s photos redone, make sure they let their teacher know they will be getting new pictures taken when the teacher announces that it is time to go to the photo location. Students having their pictures redone must bring the entire package back and give it to the photographer at the time of the retake.

HELP OUR SCHOOL EARN MONEY WITH BOX TOPS!
Box Tops for Education (BTFE) has been a great way to earn money for our school. This year we will be using the BTFE app as we transition from physical, clipped Box Tops to solely scanning the receipt. Please download the app for Android or iOS today if you have not already done so.
We will also continue to collect unexpired clipped Box Tops that may still appear on product packaging. Please send them in a small bag or envelope with your child’s grade and/or teacher’s name. Our first collection is DUE OCT 29th. Until products are phased out entirely from clips, it is acceptable to “double dip” for points i.e. hand in the clip AND scan your receipt!
You can enter info such as the grade or classroom teacher to enable us to hold contests by grade! Let your neighbors/extended family know they can also specify the same!
Any questions or concerns? Please go to www.boxtops4education.com or www.BTFE.com or contact Sandy Monroy: sandy@monroy.org
