Attention 8th graders & Parents/Guardians!
Career Lessons
All 8th grade students are participating in Career Lessons through their ELA class as the 8th grade portion of their High School and Beyond Plan (a high school graduation requirement). There are two different class lessons: the first focuses on interests and skills and which careers might be a good match; the second is about transitioning to high school, high school credits and how to relate college or career interests to 9th grade class registration. Mrs. Nootenboom is doing these lessons in the ELA class, so your student either participated 2nd quarter or it is coming up this month! ELA teachers will also have students complete a graded Career Project before the end of the school year.
High School Registration
You will be receiving details soon about high school registration. There will be a parent night likely the end of this month and then students will register in the first two weeks of March. Your student will receive instructions and guidance on how to register. They will also have several days to discuss the options at home with you or seek advice from current teachers before turning in class choices.
Students living in the boundary of EMS will go to Central Valley High School. If you live in the boundary of University High School or Ridgeline or your student is interested in SVT or Mica Peak High School, please contact me so I can be sure your student gets appropriate forms and contacts.
Spokane Valley Tech (SVT)
The STEM Academy at SVT is accepting applications for the upcoming school year now! If your student is interested in attending SVT instead of Central Valley High School, they must apply. Applications are due by February 26 and require 4 references and a statement of interest by the student. Please view the information on their website if you are interested https://www.spokanevalleytech.org/
The STEM Academy is a rigorous program for students who are interested in a STEM field of study, enjoy project based learning and working with others. Students create and manage their own projects, so you must be a self-starter!
