Town of Sunnyvale - Oct. 30, 2021

Message from the Town Council

We are sad to announce that Town Manager Susan Guthrie has made the decision to retire from the Town of Sunnyvale to move back to Arizona to be nearer to her family.

“I have loved working for the Town over the last three years. I feel like the team has accomplished so much and have confidence that you all will continue to do so,” she shared in her resignation letter.

Susan started in early 2019 as Town Manager, and brought many years of municipal government experience to the Town. Her expertise in performance excellence, key performance indicators, improving operational efficiencies, experience in both the public and private sectors, and a strong commitment to employee development made her an excellent fit for this role as our Town Manager.

Susan has given so much to this community. Her efforts are well recognized and we shall always remember how important she was for us. She has a long list of accomplishments during her tenure in Sunnyvale, including significant economic development activity and growth under her watch, such as Hope Coffee, QT, Whataburger, Chick-fil-A, Starbucks and several industrial projects. She helped stand up our new Sunnyvale Police Department, oversaw the design of the new fire station and the reconstruction of Collins Road. She initiated the development of a citizen capital improvement plan that led to several projects currently under construction. She and her team began many community events, such as the Turkey Trot, the Veterans Day Event, and the Christmas Drive Thru Event. She also oversaw major projects such as the purchase of 4.2 miles of rail corridor for a rails to trails project, the purchase of Jobson Park, and the purchase of four acres of land for a future public works facility. Further, Susan worked diligently to maintain and strengthen a strong relationship with our outstanding schools.

Council has appointed Robert M. Turner, a very seasoned City Manager as the Interim Town Manager effective Monday, Nov. 1. Mr. Turner will start transitioning with Susan and will assist in the search for Susan’s replacement.
