Every Student Counts, Every Moment Matters!
Message From Principal Webb
Hello families-
It was a fun week back after our extended weekend break. We have two full weeks until winter break and we are trying to squeeze in a lot of learning and fun.
This week we started Monday off with our PBIS assembly recognizing Longhorns for being Safe, Supportive and Responsible. On Friday, 5th grade took a field trip to the Nutcracker performance. A Big Thank You to a Longfellow family for making this trip possible.
I know that in the upcoming weeks we will have different opportunities for families to join our music classes in specific grades so please look for more information to come. Also, our PTA McDonald's Teacher Night is December 17th!
ISASP scores will be coming home with students in 4th-6th grade on Friday, December 13th. Please check your student's backpack for this information.
Thank you for all of the support and volunteers that made the Book Fair possible!
Sincerely,
Kelli Webb
TEACHER FEATURE:1st grade
Meet Mrs. Blythe…
Mrs. Blythe is thrilled to be able to spend her first year of teaching as a Longfellow Longhorn! She loves to encourage each student to be proud of their progress that they are making as well as the hard work it took to get there. When she was a first grader, she only put her books down at dinner, created too many home video skits with her friends, and developed a love for creating and crafting. Within the classroom you might hear her say “It’s so exciting to learn new things!” This is something she believes for her students as well as herself. When she’s not at school, you can find her knitting, watching the Food channel, or spending time with her husband.
Meet Mrs. Nash…
Mrs. Nash has been a Longhorn since 2007. She has always taught first grade at Longfellow but has had four different classrooms. Helping students feel comfortable, connected and confident is her top priority. She treasures all of her current and former students. As a first grader, she wished her name was Nancy, got in trouble for talking too much at school and began taking dance lessons. Mrs. Nash’s favorite quote is, “If plan A doesn’t work, stay cool, there are 25 more letters in the alphabet” because it captures the diversity of teaching and learning so well! When Mrs. Nash is not at school, she is doing ordinary but fun things with her husband and her three young children ages 6, 3, and 10 months. She enjoys trips to the library, playing games, snuggling in with a book, and imagining being a good cook.
Meet Mrs. Steine…
Mrs. Steine became a Longhorn in 2015! She has taught first grade for many years in Solon and was also a Reading Recovery teacher. She feels that first grade is a magical year of growth and learning, therefore it is her absolute favorite-in every way! Reading is a personal passion and you can often find her at the ICPL- one of her favorite places! As a first grader, she remembers the moment when she realized she didn’t have to memorize every book in the library because she could read them! That was a relief! One of her favorite quotes is one her mother often said, “Can’t never did a thing!” When Mrs. Steine is not at school, she enjoys her family, books, and the outdoors.

Date Change for McTeacher’s Night
Please note that there is a date change for our planned McTeacher’s Night: It will
be on Tuesday, December 17, 2019.
As a reminder: Longfellow will be participating in a fundraising initiative that allows
schools to “take over” a local McDonald’s restaurant for a set period of time, with a
percentage of sales going directly to support specific school needs. We have booked the
Longfellow night at the McDonald’s on Lower Muscatine Road (near Sycamore Mall) on
Tuesday, December 17, 2019, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., so please mark your calendars
and plan to attend!
There is a special classroom competition during this two-hour dining event: The
Longfellow class with the most student attendees will win $100 for its room! Each
participating student will fill out a sheet when he or she comes in, and organizers will
tally these sheets at the end of the two-hour event to determine the classroom winner. In
addition, we’ll need two parent volunteers who can help us out with managing this
event—or one parent volunteer who is willing to staff the event for the full two hours.
Please contact PTA President Lanny Tygrett, at presidentlongfellowpta@gmail.com, to
help out. We can’t make this happen without your help!
We’re grateful to everyone who helped with our book fair, and we want to give special
thanks to Longfellow parent and PTA Treasurer Tara Shochet and our librarian, Mrs.
Morey, for organizing and staffing this event.
Anyone can join the PTA! We ask for a $10 “goodwill” donation when you join, but this
fee is totally optional. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at 6:30
p.m. in the Longfellow library. All are welcome, and we hope to see you there!
Student Service Project
A Longhorn student is supporting this mission-By collecting used or unused sunglasses-these are then distributed to farmers in Guatamala. A pair of sunglasses will prevent a Guatemalan farmer from contracting blinding eye diseases from the intense wind, dust and sunlight. The leading cause of disability in Guatemala is blindness. A box is located in the school office.
