Welcome to the new SMS Scoop!
News to Know!
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - January 19th
All Social Studies teachers will be having lessons based on Dr. King's life and work on Monday. Eighth graders will be virtually touring the Civil Rights Museum and learning about Emmitt Till, the focus of a Bob Dylan song. Seventh graders will be watching Dr. King's "I Have a Dream Speech" and comparing his comments to those of recent leaders. Sixth graders will be studying the life of King and comparing/contrasting violent and non-violent protests.
We will then join together as a school community to conduct a service project Tuesday through Friday that week. We are going to collect non-perishable foods for the Scott County Clearinghouse! Bring anything you can from the list below.
Scott County Clearinghouse Needs:
Canned fruit & vegetables, Cereal, Deodorant, Dishwashing liquid, Fabric softener, Granola bars, Instant oatmeal, Macaroni & cheese, Paper towels, Pasta products, Peanut butter, Pop tarts, Saltines, Bar Soap/Shampoo, Toilet paper, and Toothpaste & toothbrushes.
Mmm Mmm Good!
Portions of entrees and fruit and vegetable sides have been increased for the 6-8 menu. These portions reflect Federal guidelines and will not change the price of our meals!
The new SMS menu features student favorites and some newer options. Once a month, students will have a Pasta Bar where they can choose between Chicken Alfredo or Meatball Marinara for the whole grain penne pasta. A monthly Burrito Bar is modeled after popular restaurants that offer customers a choice of toppings (taco or chicken) and students will be able to top their own burritos. Freshly prepared sides such as roasted red potatoes, squash and zucchini, and black bean salsa are on the menu now as well.
The district will soon have an interactive menu available for all students, staff, and parents. This menu will be available via website and free mobile app. This menu will have complete ingredient listing, nutrient data, and photos of the menu items. Students will also be able to rate the menu items and comment! The School Nutrition department will use these comments and ratings to determine future menu offerings. We are very excited to start with this concept!
Any questions about these changes can be forwarded to School Nutrition Director, Leigh Anne Peterson. She can be reached at email@example.com or 812-752-8921.
