Patriot Notes by Dr. Laura Raeder, Principal
Student safety remains a priority here at Lincoln High School. We recently had a change to our Close Contact policy for the district. If the positive student and the close contact were both wearing masks, the close contact student now has the opportunity to stay in school. Remember, if the COVID positive student is wearing a mask, but your child is not wearing one, your child will need to quarantine at home for 14 days. If this situation impacts your student, a principal will contact you. This is a great time to remind your student to wear the mask properly covering the mouth and nose.
An area where a student could potentially be exposed to COVID is during open lunch. At times, students may ride together or eat together without wearing masks for longer than 15 minutes and they are closer than six feet. Please work with your students to make a plan to stay safe when they leave the building for open lunch.
We started October by hosting virtual parent/teacher/student conferences. If you would like to discuss your student's progress and learning, please continue to contact your child's teachers and counselor. At LHS we want to be proactive so we have created a Student Support Department that works with students when they are out of school, when they return to school and if they need extra support and time to work on class assignments and tests. We will continue to provide support to all students to help them be successful.
Have a Thankful November.

Our Work Amid COVID
By Dr. Jane Stavem, Superintendent
I recently worked on a document and before sending it, applied a watermark to indicate it was a DRAFT copy. You’ve probably all seen a document with a watermark at one point or another. You can clearly see the copy, but on every page the watermark serves as some type of reminder.
That’s how COVID feels this year. There is an ever-presence about it, yet we recognize other priorities cannot be overlooked.
· Student achievement data must be reviewed to guide instructional decisions.
· Two new schools are opening next fall with construction going on every day.
· Seniors are beginning to make post-graduation plans.
· Decisions about summer program offerings are upon us.
· Winter sports and activities will be starting just around the corner.
· Work on the updated strategic plan begins second semester.
No matter what challenges lie in front of us, each day students, staff, and parents/guardians have an opportunity to get better. How can we incorporate a mindset of continuous improvement into everything we do? John Maxwell says that continuous improvement “comes to the steady people who keep working at getting better.” That means hour to hour, day to day, week to week, month to month, and year to year.
As stakeholders help the District envision the next strategic plan, a continuous strategic improvement mindset must be embedded in everything we do. But long before we have that document finalized, we can all be putting this firmly in place now, despite COVID or any other barrier.
· Are more students present and engaged in their learning today than yesterday?
· Did my child read more pages this week than last week?
· Are we, as a family, focused on doing our best today with a goal of being even better tomorrow?
COVID has proven to be a challenge. But, we cannot let it win. As educators and parents, our work never ends – is the “continuous” in continuous improvement. We need to celebrate successes, and when we have the mindset of getting better, every day is an opportunity for celebration – for students, for staff, and for our district.
I am trying to see the gray word in the background less and focus on the real work at hand more. I hope you will, too. Together, we’re going to keep moving forward and help our students do the same.
Planning for Our Future Together in the Months Ahead
In addition to continuing our instruction, Lincoln High School has been able to maintain a mostly regular activities schedule. We’ve been able to have events that are important to the student experience, like homecoming.
As we enter into the second quarter, it will take the same kind of teamwork to continue in-classroom instruction, sports, fine arts activities, and other seasonal events.
Now is time to renew our commitment to wearing our face coverings properly, covering both the mouth and the nose, washing our hands thoroughly with soap and water, and maintaining social distancing when possible. Further, we need to renew our commitment to avoid or reduce social gatherings outside of the school day that could increase exposure.
With the holidays approaching, Lincoln High School encourages you to be creative and begin making alternate plans to stay connected with family and friends who are important to you.
Reconsider travel plans.
Schedule virtual family gatherings.
Stay home when you are sick.
In addition to COVID-19, influenza, and other seasonal viruses that seem to spread when families are cooped up for the winter may also cause illness and the need for some students to be out of school.
By all doing our part, “together” we can continue to keep our schools open for our students.

SENIOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS...WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The NCRC test (National Career Readiness Certificate) is Tuesday, October 27 during periods
1-3. Please encourage your SENIOR student to be at school on Tuesday around 8:00 a.m.
The test developed by ACT certifies skills necessary for workplace success. When students join the job hunt, their job applications will mix with many others on the desks of employers. Our students will have the opportunity to move their application to the top of the stack by taking the NCRC test. Employers look for it from job candidates, whether they come directly from high school, work-based learning programs, or through post-secondary paths, because it is a valid predictor of job performance.
With an NCRC, you can:
- Build confidence that your skills meet the needs of employers
- Show prospective employers concrete proof of the skills you have
- Apply real-world use to coursework from the classroom
- Determine skill improvement and training needs
- Improve the opportunities for career changes and advancement
Students will be assigned to testing rooms and testing begins at 8:20 a.m. Students will take three exams: Applied Math, Workplace Documents, and Graphic Literacy. Testing will conclude around 11:25 a.m. Again, please encourage your son/daughter to be at school on October 27th and have them do their best on the NCRC Test.

Senior Class of 2021 Yearbook Photo Submission Information
If you are not planning to have your school photo used as your senior yearbook picture, then you need to follow these steps to ensure that your choice photo makes it into the upcoming yearbook. (Reminder: yearbooks are not delivered until fall so you will need to pick it up at next August's Patriot Power Day!)
1) Please ensure you did not check that you did not want your photo published in school publications on your registration. If you did, that will need to be changed and called in to the school office before I can put you in the yearbook.
2) Choose a vertical photo (goes up and down not horizontal) that is school appropriate. It should be a file size that is 2MB or larger. Do not do a screenshot of a photo from any social media sites and do not use Snap with a filter and think it will be large enough.
3) ATTACH your photo to an email to me. Please do not insert it as it will be compressed and will not work. Please include the student's name in the subject line of your email. cindy.cummins@k12.sd.us
4) These are due by January 29th but if you have them ready, feel free to start sending them.
5) Yearbook staff will be doing a shoot for seniors who are unable to afford to pay a photographer's fees. It will be a simple shoot at LHS, but will be free. More info and specific dates to come.
Thank you! Don't forget to purchase your yearbook online at yearbookforever.com and search for Lincoln in Sioux Falls. Email again--- cindy.cummins@k12.sd.us
