Word for the Warrior
Hello Warriors!
I hope all of you had a well-deserved and RESTFUL three-day weekend!
Tomorrow is an EXCITING DAY!
Tomorrow is the first day of Warrior Academy! What is special to me about this day is that the opening day of Warrior Academy is that is the 100% and TOTAL COMPLETION of a JSMS vision that is coming to fruition!
What I love most about being a Warrior is that we are problem solvers! We have high expectations for our students and when something is not working, we do WHATEVER IT TAKES for the same of helping our kids.
Warrior Academy is the result of long and hard planning meetings to determine what action steps would result in a program designed to best support our most challenging students and SUPPORT them in acquiring skills to be successful in the classroom, in school and in life.
This program required all of us giving something up for the sake of our kids. What makes me get emotional when I think of our staff is how many times we say YES for the sake for our kids. The creation of Warrior Academy meant losing a teacher for this year in our gen ed classes, which meant we had teachers who said, YES to higher class sizes. Teachers were willing to take that on in order to benefit the whole. In addition, we had to have a teacher say YES to splitting a grade level in their content (Becky Creasy). That teacher has taken on planning for two different grade level during a year of new standards. This teacher is also getting to know two new Science teams. Finally, this teacher is juggling TWO collaborative planning sessions in order to make this work. THAT is a sacrifice...but one she found worthy of sacrificing herself for the good of her students and for the good of Sevier. Stephen Baker said YES to being the teacher for Warrior Academy and I know in our heads, we are giving him a standing ovation right now. Stephen is a teacher who has a perfect balance of love and compassion for students, an ability to coach and inspire an ability to deliver content and an ability to have high academic and behavioral expectations for students all at the same time! He volunteered to take our most challenging students and say YES…to taking a chance to see if we could have a school within a school behavioral intervention class that would help our students succeed!
I am not aware of any other school that has pulled off such a challenge completely on their own. This is 100% the result of Sevier work that has been accomplished 100% on our own and I could not be more proud!
THANK YOU FOR SAYING YES TO OUR KIDS! Thank you for saying yes, when it meant making personal sacrifices. Thank you for saying yes to be innovative problem solvers! Thank you for your unwavering Warrior Spirit and for being World Changing Warriors!
We are John Sevier!

JSMS JAM...
SEL TIME
Please ensure that each student is receiving adequate daily SEL Time. Our teacher surveys reveal that above all things, what they wish is for students to have greater social emotional skills...this includes self-control, motivation, and confidence. If we do not change something about what WE do, we cannot depend on anything to change with our students. This daily time is an expectation. Please ensure that students ALL have equal access to this time. This time should not be skipped or cut short. Thank you for investing in our students in this way.
Monday - Monday Motivation
Tuesday - Goal Setting (Powerschool/grades)
Wednesday - Naviance
Thursday - Second Step
Friday - Goal Setting (Goal for the next week)

Food City Bucks
Food City School Bucks
This is a request for those of you who shop at any of the Food City locations in our region. Food City, through the School Bucks Program, donates money back to schools each year. The amount of the donation is based on the amount of money customers spend at Food City (excluding gas and gift cards). Purchases are credited to the school to which the customer links his/her Value Card. It does not matter which store you shop and you do not have to have a child at Sevier in order to select Sevier Middle School as the school you wish to link to your Value Card. Please encourage other family members and friends to identify Sevier as their school if they are not already supporting another school with their Food City purchases.
There are three ways to link your card to SEVIER MIDDLE SCHOOL. These are:
- Tell the cashier ringing up your purchases that you would like to like you card to Sevier. You only have to do this one time and not every time you shop.
- Take the attached flyer to your local Food City in order to have your card linked.
- Good to https://www.foodcity.com/schoolbucks and link your card from the Food City website.
Cards must be linked annually, so now is the time for shoppers to link their value cards.
