THE RISE OF ROBERTS
ROBERTS MIDDLE SCHOOL
WHAT LIES BENEATH?
Imagine Michelangelo working on David. He said that inside every block of stone dwells a beautiful statue. We just need to see it and then remove the excess material to reveal the work of art within. What is your ideal version of yourself? Roberts family, we all have layers of raw material that need to be removed in our life. Your greatest potential lies within you; however, we must chisel away those layers of insecurity, doubt, ego, and compliancy. Day by day, inch by inch, moment by moment, we must chisel the layers of life's labels to get to our masterpiece.
You are stronger than you know. Believe in your ability to figure things out. I want you to choose to be your highest, boldest, strongest, best, and happiest self in every situation. Deep within us lies our masterpiece, but it is a choice to pick the chisel up, it is a choice to remove the layers, and it is a choice to sculpt. Michelangelo said, “If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all.” Let us go forth and work to be the best version of ourselves and create a school like no other.

OUR VERY OWN STEFFANIE MODELING
TURN AND TALK
WANT MORE STUDENT participation?
Last year, our instructional focus was checking for understanding. It is important that as we begin to use real-time data to personalize small group and individual instruction, that we don’t lose sight of the checking for understanding strategies that improved student success last year. This week, we would like to highlight one of those checking for understanding strategies introduced last year, Turn and Talk.
You know that students should be participating - all of them, as often as possible. Turn and Talk is one type of oral language support strategy that provides students scaffolded interactions to formulate ideas and share their thinking with another student. When Turn and Talk is used, all students have a chance to share their thinking in a low-risk setting. This is beneficial for all students but especially important for intervention and SPED students and ELLs. It is an alternative to students sharing responses individually or chorally responding, which can be intimidating and only allows teachers to check for the understanding of a few. Turn & Talk is one of many examples of checking for understanding and informal assessment that can be used to begin to collect real time data to inform instruction. It also gives teachers a chance to preview responses shared with other students to ensure that they are valid, so students are not confused by incorrect responses.
Turn and Talk is an easy participation structure to establish and use in the full range of settings in classroom instruction in all content areas. It provides the language we speak to become part of the regular classroom procedures.
What makes Roberts special is the fact that we create purpose. We don’t merely wait for purpose to come to us. By creating 25 clubs based on student interest we have created a learning community that students want to be a part of, where they have a sense of belonging, and now a hook to come to school. I appreciate each of you for your excitement and commitment for each of the clubs. The success of each club will be based on us. We have the opportunity to create and design how each club will perform. This is our opportunity to allow our students to see us in a different light without compromising our expectations. Let us have fun and make this program the reason our students find a sense of belonging here at Roberts.
