The Broad Street Counselor
Updates on School Counseling at Broad Street Elementary
December 2021
Happy December!
December is typically the month in our school counseling program where we focus on equipping students with the necessary tools to understand their emotions and the emotions of others. We talk about how students can have several emotions at once (known as "Scribble Spot") and the importance of practicing kindness towards themselves and others.
One resource that we will be utilizing this month is "A Little Scribble Spot: A Story About Colorful Emotions". This book talks about how it is healthy to experience different emotions, but when they get jumbled together it can make things confusing or even frustrating. A great way to talk to your student about emotional understanding is to encourage them to identify how they are feeling. For example, when you ask them about their day and they say the usual "good" ask them to pick a feeling word to describe how they felt. When we take the time to help our students develop self-awareness skills we are setting them up to be successful.
As always, let me know if you need any support. Feel free to send me an email to set up a time to connect via phone or Zoom!
