General News! Week of August 22-26
Hard to believe that we are beginning our 4th week of school...time is flying by! You should begin to see grades going into PowerSchool on a regular basis. Please remember that a "0" at this point generally represents an assignment that your child has missed either due to an absence, or some other circumstance. It is their responsibility to get with their teachers, and make the necessary arrangements to get these completed and turned in. Most of us are available before school if the student gets their planner signed the day before.
Upcoming Dates to Remember:
August 23- Title I Stakeholder Meeting 6pm
September 1st- SMMS Yearbooks are on sale now for $37.00 ( order online at)
September 5th- Labor Day Holiday (No School)
September 6th- Title I Annual Meeting 6pm.
September 14th- 1st Quarter Progress Reports go home

Happy Monday! This week our novel study has us taking a closer look at our two groups/gangs, the greasers and the socs. Students will be utilizing textual evidence that they located last week, to help them create Venn diagrams. We will also review the basic elements of a plot diagram and determine where the events we have already read about belong.
For grammar we will be working on our 2nd "M.U.G. Shot Monday" where we will analyze the mechanics, usage, and grammar rules so we can apply them in our own writing. We are also doing a quick review of our parts of speech, (seems many of our 8th graders do not have a very strong knowledge of these and the role they play in our writing!) We will be taking a quick quiz on these before the week's end.
Our 60's slang words will be quizzed this week, on Tuesday. Students have a StudyStack link available to them in their Google Classroom. On Friday they were asked to create their own quick write utilizing these terms, and we had some very interesting stories!
"Rootie Tootie Thursdays" will continue our work with sub and trans, our over and under prefixes. The students should be ready for a quiz on these terms next week.
Just a quick reminder about homework, your student should be reading independently each evening for approximately 20-30 minutes. I have asked the students to try and complete at least one of their books by Aug. 26th, which is this Friday. This will help me have a better idea of their independent reading comprehension. We took a trip to the library today, so everyone should have something to read!
I have made a few adjustments to our grading percentages by adding two more categories. I believe this will show a more accurate picture of each student's progress. The categories are as follows: Reading 32.5%, Writing 32.5%, Grammar/Vocabulary 20%, Formative Practice 10%, and Independent Practice 5%. If you have any questions about these, please feel free to drop me a note, and I will be happy to discuss them with you.
Math- Mrs. McKinney
Math - Monday we will be working on remote interior angles and Tuesday we will be finding the length of transversals that are divided by parallel lines. Tuesday the students will have a graphing homework assignment and Wednesday-Friday the students will be learning about translations and reflections on the coordinate plane. The quiz I wanted students to take last week will be taken on Tuesday, expect grades in the gradebook Tuesday night. Students will have homework Wednesday night over translations, and another quiz on finding angle measures on Friday. Blocks 1,2, and 4 will work on their projects for about 25 minutes each day in class.
