GREETINGS FROM PRINCIPAL COLLINS
Dear PELC Families -
This morning, I had a group of Kindergarten students in my office to do the Pledge of Allegiance with me. They reminded me that most recently, they had been in my office for "Pirate Day" and one student proceeded to tell me that he'd brought a "hanky" in that day for the event. I have never heard anyone but my father use that word before so it surprised me that a 6 year old even knew what a hanky was. He went on to assure me that it was a clean hanky and not one that had his grandpa's "snot in it" and we continued to discuss the importance of washing things like hankies before you share them so everyone stays healthy and germ free. I have absolutely no idea what the hanky was used for on Pirate day and honestly, it didn't matter. These few minutes of surprisingly engaging conversation completely overshadowed the original topic!
In this month of love, I am telling you that THIS is why I love what I do. It's moments like these that keep ALL of us in this tough profession. The stories of wonder, honesty, and surprise that often walk into my office could fill a book and I would bet that is true of every teacher in this building. There are plenty of tough things we deal with and work through in an elementary school, but when I get to start my day with an animated discussion about a clean hanky on pirate day, I'd say life here at the PELC is pretty good.

PBIS Update from Mrs. Osowski
During the month of January, we focussed on playground safety during the winter. Here are the areas we discussed and practiced:
Be respectful and responsible with the snow (keep it on the ground or to build with)
Be respectful of others snow creations (leave them or add to them)
Be safe by staying off of the icy areas on the playground and equipment
In the month of February, we will be focussing on being respectful, responsible and safe in the cafeteria.
A Note from the School Nurse
Hello PELC families! As we enter into the winter season, (and the season of the flu and colds) please help remind your children to wash their hands! Hand washing is the number one way to prevent the transmission of germs and prevent illness! Here in my office, the saying is “Give Me 5!”
1. Wet
2. Soap
3. Wash- for 15 seconds (or as long as it takes to sing the ABC’s)
4. Rinse
5. Dry
Cold and Flu season is underway, so please be aware of the symptoms! And if you have not gotten a flu vaccine yet this season, it is not too late! If your child is sick, please remember they must be FEVER FREE (temperature less than 100 degrees) without the use of fever reducing medications for 24 hours before they can return to school.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at school. I will be happy to work with you to help your child have a healthy rest of the school year!
