Treating Each Other Kindly
Each grade level receives instruction in treating others with respect and dignity. These lessons lead into specific content around bullying, harassment and intimidation. Fourth and fifth grade students receive lessons as part of the Second Steps curriculum called “Bullying Prevention." These lessons teach students to “Recognize, Report, Refuse" in order to eliminate bullying in school. They are also taught to recognize what bullying is and isn’t, report to a trusted adult and learn how to stop the bullying by assertively telling the person engaging in bullying behaviors that what they are doing is not okay. We also place an emphasis on the power of the “bystander” or someone who is present when the bullying is occurring but not directly engaging with any bullying behaviors. Cyberbullying and internet safety are also addressed. If you’d like more information on the curriculum that can be found here: https://www.secondstep.org/bullying-prevention
Beyond the teaching of specific ways to prevent and address bullying behaviors, at Valley View we are continually addressing a positive climate where respect, empathy and solving problems in a positive manner are emphasized. If you’d like more information or resources a number of great ones to use with your family and children are found here: https://www.cfchildren.org/resources/bullying-prevention-resources/
