Many Good Things

While things have certainly been "different" for us here at school, there are many good things that we have experienced during this time. Smaller class sizes, classes staying with their own groups during recess and eating lunch with their classroom teachers are nice experiences for our students. There has been an increased ability for each child to interact and actively participate in the classroom and in non structured social settings during the day. We have seen student confidence and skill grow due to their increased involvement. We have also observed students making friends with new and maybe different social groups than they might have in our previous school setting. Teachers have had the chance to have an extra 15-20 minutes a day to talk with students during lunch time in their rooms. While working on a computer is less desirable and effective than in-person learning , our students have acquired technological skills that will serve them well in the years ahead.

Art with Mrs. Chase

We are excited that Mrs. Chase has returned to teaching art as part of our specialist rotation! She is teaching in the cafeteria, which allows students to safely social distance and have ample room to work. Kindergarten has been exploring the abstract art of Piet Mondrian: 1st grade, the pop art of Jim Dine; 2nd and 3rd grade, Gustav Klimt's Tree of Love; and 4th and 5th grade, Wassily Kandinsky's Heart Color Scheme.

Treating Each Other Kindly

Each grade level receives instruction in treating others with respect and dignity. These lessons lead into specific content around bullying, harassment and intimidation. Fourth and fifth grade students receive lessons as part of the Second Steps curriculum called “Bullying Prevention." These lessons teach students to “Recognize, Report, Refuse" in order to eliminate bullying in school. They are also taught to recognize what bullying is and isn’t, report to a trusted adult and learn how to stop the bullying by assertively telling the person engaging in bullying behaviors that what they are doing is not okay. We also place an emphasis on the power of the “bystander” or someone who is present when the bullying is occurring but not directly engaging with any bullying behaviors. Cyberbullying and internet safety are also addressed. If you’d like more information on the curriculum that can be found here: https://www.secondstep.org/bullying-prevention

Beyond the teaching of specific ways to prevent and address bullying behaviors, at Valley View we are continually addressing a positive climate where respect, empathy and solving problems in a positive manner are emphasized. If you’d like more information or resources a number of great ones to use with your family and children are found here: https://www.cfchildren.org/resources/bullying-prevention-resources/
