The Weekly Update
Sept 8-Sept 15th
Kickoff of our Textiles Unit: Clothing and Fashion
This past week, among many technology setbacks, students took their MAP pretest. This allows us to have a baseline of where students are as they come back from the summer. If you are interested in MAP testing information check out this link on our website: https://goo.gl/cvbyBF
Next week students will begin learning about their projects and begin diving into the history, science, and math behind fashion. Below is an overview of the project and a copy of the project unit.
Driving Question: How do clothing and fashion reflect culture through time?
Project Overview: Foothills Community School was approached by several textile companies looking to showcase the evolution of textiles (specifically clothing and fashion) throughout time. The textile companies have asked that students produce a museum-like display that includes a plaque (or informational display). These will be displayed at a family night, and then several will be showcased across WNC in textile facilities.
What kind of scores did FCS have for 2016-17?
Our reading and math goals for the 2017-18 school year are to ensure that 70% of our student population are performing at grade level (proficient) and that students are on track to meet their college and career goals for the future. We also strive for 100% of our students to achieve growth in their skills and abilities. Some adjustments that we have made based on student, parent, and community feedback include:
-Doubling the amount of content time per week. (Last year students had 2 hours of content time, this year they will have 4 hours of content time per week).
-WIN time is restructured to provide intensive support, direct instruction and enrichment opportunities for students.
-We increased enrollment by 33% by adding 3 new full-time staff members, and a part time math tutor.
We will continue working to provide high-quality science instruction to ensure 95% proficiency for the 2017-18 school year.
Reminder!
Just a few reminders:
Thursday is FCS 101 Parent Night.
During this time, we will:
-Have AIG meetings (all students should have received an invitation to a meeting).
-Orange Sky Travel will be there to discuss spring trip for sign-ups
- Google 101 Class
-Fundraising
-MAP Information
-Pizza and Drinks!
Volunteer Help Needed:
This Year FCS has partnered with McDowell Early College to build a stronger partnership, on Sept 26th, they will visit staff from 11:45-12:50pm to train them on instructional rounds. A critical feedback process that will strengthen our instruction. We need 8 volunteers to support families groups during that time. If you are willing to spend some time (lunch and project work) with our fantastic FCS scholars, please let me know at melanie.shaver@mcdowell.k12.nc.us
