Rethinking Teaching and Time
A "Flipped Classroom" is a classroom that uses class time to do activities/lessons (guided by the teacher) and "homework" time for guided instruction, usually through video. Basically, it turns a classroom upside down: the learning of a topic is done at home and then the applied practice or work is done at school. Video Lesson Libraries
Don't reinvent the wheel. There are thousands of video lessons already out there. Here are a few sites to get you started:
- Teaching Channel offers educators a wide range of subjects for grades K-12. The videos also include information on alignment with Common Core State Standards and ancillary material for teachers to use in their own classrooms.
- Knowmania's library includes over 15,000 video lessons on school subjects from teachers everywhere. Each lesson contains relevant tags so it's easy to find. App available for the iPad.
- LearnZillion is a learning platform that combines video lessons, assessments, and progress reporting. Each lesson highlights a Common Core standard, starting with math in grades 3-9. App available for the iPad. Tutorials: Create a class, Enroll students, Assign Lessons
- Khan Academy covers math, science topics such as biology, chemistry, and physics, and even reaches into the humanities with playlists on finance and history. App available for the iPad
- YouTube, School Tube, Teacher Tube- All have a wide variety of videos on various topics.
- SchoolsWorld- is a brand-new, multimedia platform, providing innovative and informative content for everyone involved with or wanting to be involved in schools. Besides all the content from Teachers TV, there is something for everyone: videos, interactive games, work sheets, fact sheets, information and latest education news.
- Math Playground - Step by step videos show how to solve
math problems from number properties to algebra. - OpenEd- the world's largest educational resource catalog (over a quarter million of them). OpenEd is committed to keeping all of this access available free to all teachers worldwide.
- Glean- With Glean, students discover lessons by searching or browsing directly within a subject. Once a topic is chosen, Glean will quickly scan and analyze all the teachers within that topic to find those who match a student’s learning style closest. And if the video is not quite right for them, tell Glean and it gets better.
- Mocomi is a nice website featuring educational and entertaining content for elementary and middle school students. The main feature of Mocomi is their collection of more than 300 educational videos. The animated videos provide short lessons on everything from the history of Greek language to explanations of how car engines work.
- Neo K-12- Educational videos, lessons and games for K-12 students
- CK-12 Elementary Collection of Mathematics - The collection is organized by grade level (grades 1 through 5) and skill. The resources are a mix of videos and online practice exercises.
- My Pinterest collection of Flippin' Videos
- TedEd is TED’s youth and education initiative. TED-Ed’s mission is to spark and celebrate the ideas of teachers and students around the world. Everything we do supports learning — from producing a growing library of original animated videos , to providing an international platform for teachers to create their own interactive lessons, to helping curious students around the globe bring TED to their schools and gain presentation literacy skills, to celebrating innovative leadership within TED-Ed’s global network of over 250,000 teachers.
- National Geographic Kids inspires young adventurers to explore the world through award-winning magazines, books, apps, games, toys, videos, events, and a website, and is the only kids brand with a world-class scientific organization at its core.
- Newsela Elementary showcases Newsela articles geared toward a younger audience. When teachers and students use e.newsela.com, they’ll discover thought-provoking and engaging articles on the topics they relate to best.
- Brainpop and Brainpop Jr. In classrooms, on mobile devices, and at home, BrainPOP engages students through animated movies, learning games, interactive quizzes, primary source activities, concept mapping, and more.

Hosting Platforms
Once you have your videos, you will need to host them on a site your students can access from home and school.
- NEISD Google Docs Resources Google Docs is a free, Web-based word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, form, and data storage service offered by Google. It allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real-time with other users.
- Edublogs- Students and Teachers in NEISD have the ability to create and maintain their own blog. Please submit a help desk ticket to create your account.
- Edmodo-Edmodo is designed to get students excited about learning in a familiar environment. On Edmodo, teachers can continue classroom discussions online, give polls to check for student understanding, and award badges to individual students based on performance or behavior.
- Blendspace- Create lessons in 5 minutes, collect web resources in one place and share with just one link, measure student understanding with built-in quizzes, monitor student progress and adapt to student needs in real-time. Lesson Tracking Tutorial
- YouTube - You can create your own YouTube channel using your NEISD Google account.
