MARINER MEMO
06/19/2019
Message from Michelle Kuss-Cybula
I wanted to take a few minutes to express my sincere gratitude for allowing me the opportunity to work with your children over the past four years as the principal of Sehome High School.
As I shared with my seniors on Saturday, education is arguably one of the toughest professions in the world. It may not be the most physical, most mentally challenging, or even most financially rewarding but understand that it’s the individual students that come and go in our lives that have the deepest and most profound impact on us. Their challenges, successes, and everything in-between touch our hearts indefinitely.
Your children have left a profound impact on me as an educator, principal, and community member. My heart has been filled with love, hope, pride, laughter, and joy in my work with your children.
Although I will be adorning yellow and maroon in my next chapter in life as the superintendent of Cle Elum-Roslyn School District, green and gold with always be in my heart.
I will forever cherish my memories here at Sehome and wish you and your family many years of happiness.
Michelle
Note from Marty Atkins
I write to say Thank you. This was a challenging week for me as I say goodbye to the Sehome community and an exciting week as I am looking forward to the new experiences at Squalicum. It has been my pleasure to serve as Assistant Principal for Sehome these past three years.
I am so grateful for the support, encouragement, direction, training, and patience that you have extended to me as I have learned this job. Thank you to the front office secretarial team for teaching me the technical side of this job. Thank you to the teachers for collaborating with me for the benefit of all students. Thank you to Peggy for your continued patience teaching me to be thorough and thoughtful. Thank you to Kim (and KJ) for working side-by-side to help students make great choices. Thank you to Mr. Couto for helping me to keep firm parameters for students while reminding me why we do this job. Thank you to Ms. Kuss-Cybula for years of patient coaching. And thanks to Mike and Michelle for the opportunity to work with such a high-functioning team. But mostly, thank you to the students and parents. You are the reason for our work. I believe in you and encourage you to be the best you can be. And students, remember, “make good Choices.”
Marty

If your student has a health plan in place, it will be mailed to you for review, doctor’s orders if needed, and your signature and date. Please make sure to sign and date the last page, check the appropriate boxes, then return to Sehome main office.
Sehome’s school nurse, Alyssa Johnson, is available to meet after August 19 and can be reached at 360-201-8766 or alyssa.johnson@bellinghamschools.org.

Free SCRUBS CAMP
FREE SCRUBS CAMP— A ONE DAY WORKSHOP FOR HIGHSCHOOLERS AT BELLINGHAM TECHNICAL COLLEGE ON JUNE 26—HOSTED BY AREA HEALTH EDUCATION CENTER
Bellingham, Washington – June 11, 2019 – High school students can explore healthcare career options during “Scrubs Camp,” a free one-day workshop on June 26 at Bellingham Technical College. Through hands-on activities with professionals, participants will learn about careers in nursing, emergency medicine, radiologic technology, surgery technology, and veterinary technology.
The camp is designed for 9th- 12th graders to encourage students to consider pursuing a career in healthcare. One of the most pressing issues facing the local and national healthcare industry today is the critical need for healthcare providers. In the coming years, thousands of additional healthcare workers will be needed in Washington State.
Lunch is provided and parents are welcome to attend. The camp will run 8:45 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Pre-registration for the camp is required.

COMPASSION 2020 PROGRAM!
The Association of Washington Generals is now accepting applications for the Compassion 2020 program!
Compassion 2020 is a statewide program that will give a select group of high school students the life-changing experience of traveling to Dharamsala, India as “Compassion Scholars” with a distinguished delegation from Washington State to meet the Dalai Lama. Following the trip, the Compassion Scholars will take on personal projects with support from the AWG aimed at inspiring compassion in their communities.
The program is open to eligible high school students who are motivated to inspire compassion in their communities, develop their leadership skills, and learn about new cultures. Up to 5 students will be selected to participate in the Compassion 2020 delegation, with all airfare and lodging expenses sponsored by the Association of Washington Generals. Students will be selected based on the thoughtfulness and thoroughness of their responses to the application essay questions and the strength of their character references.
