Hello Jag Families,
Our students and staff have had an awesome time dressing up for Red Ribbon Week! We can’t wait to RED OUT tomorrow as reminder for kids to say no to drugs. In the classroom, our teachers are working diligently to increase the academic rigor as we uphold the SMS standard of excellence. Next week we will have our first basketball games at Bowie Middle School. Jaguars are working hard and having fun as they learn so please continue to support student events. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Student Spotlight
Aashi Kasotia is an 8th grader on campus and has been recognized be her teachers as an outstanding leader among her peers. She always goes above and beyond during class to help others understand given concepts and she is a go to student if you need a peer mentor for a student. Aashi is looking forward to new ways of getting involved at Sartartia this year.
Staff Spotlight
Kevin Andrews is our new Boy’s Athletic Coordinator. He previously coached at Lake Olympia Middle School but joined the Jaguar staff this year in his 11th year as an educator. We are thrilled to have him as a Jaguar. He is our head football coach and coaches 8th grade girls basketball and boys track and field. Coach Andrews has been married for 15 years. His wife is in the medical field and they have a 12 year old daughter that is involved in Kickstart and band at her school. They also have a nocturnal cat named Axis. Coach Andrews received his Bachelors from Lamar University and Masters from the University of Phoenix. He is looking forward to the year at SMS and the future of Sartartia athletics.

Bullying Prevention Month-It is important to teach kindness to one another. Speak to your student about what bullying is and what bullying is not. Down Syndrome Awareness Month- Down Syndrome Awareness Month (DSAM) is a chance to spread awareness, advocacy and inclusion throughout the community. During the month of October, we celebrate individuals with Down syndrome and make people aware of their abilities and accomplishments. The colors representing support are blue and yellow. Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Month- October has been a time to highlight the vital role of substance abuse prevention in both individual and community health has, to remember those who have lost their lives to substance abuse, to acknowledge those in recovery, as well as children, parents, family, and friends supporting them. October is also set aside to educate communities, individuals, couples and families about Family Advocacy Program services and other community resources that can help prevent, raise awareness of community responsibility and resources for addressing domestic violence and abuse. Important Information! Middle School Semester Exam
Semester Exams Middle School Courses Semester Exams will not be given at the end of the semester in middle school courses. Instead, an additional major grade for a total of (4) major grades will be added in the last grading period of the course. o In semester courses, the second grading period will include the additional major grade. o In full year courses, the fourth grading period will include the additional major grade. The additional major grade shall align to TEKS and include a rubric or checklist where a project or performance assessment is selected. Example of types of assessment that may be used are:
• Authentic, project-based, collaborative learning experience,
• Performance based assessment, and/or
• Comprehensive examination of the course
Semester Exams High School Credit Courses taken in Middle School will have exams.
All high school credit courses taken in middle school will assess students using a cumulative semester exam at the end of the first and second semester. Semester exams shall align to the curriculum, and may include the use of multiple modalities to measure student proficiency. Semester exams shall be kept on file by the Department Head in each content area for a period of (1) year.

No Place for Hate
Mrs. McCune is looking for students/parents to serve on this years No Place for Hate committee. The committee will meet once a month to help plan 3 school wide activities to support acceptance by combating bias, bullying and hatred, and creating and maintaining a positive climate here at SMS. If you or your child is interested in being on the committee, please have them sign up in the student center or tell their grade level counselor at lunch.

Don't forget the last day for Pops-for-Tops is this Friday Nov 1st. Turn in at least 5 Box Tops and receive a Tootsie Pop!
Our competition for the most Box Tops turned in for a pizza party has ended. The winner will enjoy a pizza party with 3 other friends outside in the courtyard. The winner is our 8th grader, Colson Gosda!! Congratulations Colson!!

PAWS FOR CAUSE - JAG CASH DRIVE
Support the PTO by donating to our Annual Cash Drive. Our Goal this year is $25,000. This is the only cash drive for the entire year. With the funds raised, we have plans to build a shade for the bleachers, bring in new technology for our students, fulfill our Teacher Wish Lists, support the fine Arts department and many more. If every Household donates just $10 we will exceed our goal. Please fill out the attached form and drop it off at the front office. We accept cash/check.
SMS SHARED DREAMS FOOD DRIVE
SMS PTO is collecting Canned Food for Shared Dreams from November 4th-November 15th. We will have our collection boxes located at 2 locations, Front of the school in the vestibule and Bus ramp entrance. Its a Season of Giving, so please help us support this noble cause.
JOIN SMS PTO 2019-2020
Its never too late to join the PTO. There are no joining fees or forms to fill. We are still looking for enthusiastic parents for several positions. Please reach out to Lakshmi K @ koppolu.pto@gmail.com for more details.
SMS will host the Veteran’s Day Assembly on the morning of November 11th. Following the assembly, the PTO will host a small reception for the families and friends of the veterans who attend.
Please sign up below if you can help with some of the refreshments or volunteer to help with the reception. All items must be store bought and in the original packaging.
Please drop off the items at the Front Office by November 10th, 2019.
