Reading Workshop
This week, we will continue working on Journeys Unit 2. The students will practice recognizing and writing complete sentences with a naming part (subject) and action part (predicate), capitalizing the first word of the sentence, and using ending punctuation. As a class, we will practice using the reading strategies from the lessons 1 and 2. The boys and girls will continue retelling familiar stories using a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast different parts of a story including the characters and setting. In addition, they will be introduced to a glossary; where they are, and how and why we use them.
Global Read Aloud and Clsssroom Read Aloud
During one of our Read Aloud time this week, we will read A Day with Yaya illustrated by Julie Fett. The students will listen as a family goes on an outing to forage for herbs and mushrooms. A grandmother passes down her knowledge of plant life and the natural world to her young grandchildren. We will refer and connect to this experience on Friday when we are visit Camp Creek Run.
Have you heard about Gooney Bird Greene yet? She is the main character in a series we are reading by Lois Lowry. The books center on a second grade class at Watertower Elementary school. Gooney Bird is the new girl and loves to be in the middle of everything. There is a book each month from October through April and we will be reading all of them. These chapter books allow us to practice reading strategies, connect to characters, and carry meaning over time. They students are excited each day when we read a new chapter. Ask your second grader about Gooney Bird Greene.
Writing Workshop
Math
The second graders have worked hard learning and practicing the steps to add triple digit numbers with regrouping. Each day we discuss writing equations vertically and lining the numbers up by place value. Some students draw a tic-tac-toe board to help them make sure the place values are stacked. The students are also reminded to begin adding in the "ones," then the "tens", and finally the "hundreds."
The Touch Points have been introduced to help students add single digit numbers with more confidence. See the illustration below to see the placement on each number. Students are encouraged to tap the larger number and say its value. Then, tap each touch point on the smaller and count up; "8 + 4 = "8 - 9,10, 11, 12.'"
Lesson 5 - Addition with Regrouping in Ones and Tens
- Use base-ten blocks to add numbers with regrouping
- Add three-digit numbers with regrouping
- Solve real-world addition problems.
- Adding three-digit numbers with and without regrouping
- Using deduction to decide IF regrouping in necessary
Science
We are living with the excitement of Life Science in 2R! The students will learn why sunlight is another key necessity for plants and the students will learn how it is collected through their leaves. Knowing how plants respond to sunlight, each student will build a creative Grass Head and observe how plants grow toward sunlight.
Then, the class will participate in another Mysteries; "Should You Water A Cactus?" and "Where Do Plants Grow Best?" The students will learn that various plants have different needs based on their habitat. They will see and learn about plant characteristics that affect its needs.
