Principal's Message
Elk Family,
We have had a great week at Burleson High School. In our effort to reward students, we are piloting a new program this semester - "Believe - Honor - Strive Trust Cards". The holders of these cards are students that have met a very specific criteria from first semester. It is based on no unexcused absences, no tardies, no referrals, and achieving success in all classes. This might be a difficult task for a high school student but we have had many students earn the card. The benefit of this card allows the student increased access to the campus, such as anytime library access, hallway access during lunch, collaboration/hallway access during learning/etc... Moving forward, students can earn the card this semester as we review student data at the nine week period. We are excited about this new reward system.
"Student Voice" is very important to us and we are always looking forward to hearing from our students through focus groups, Elk Express, and surveys. This feedback allows us to improve the "Student Experience" at BHS. Currently our Honors Cohort Teachers have initiated surveys in their classroom. Each student in the cohort completes an online survey that provides feedback to the teacher. The collected feedback is then reviewed by the teacher. The teacher gains insight on how students like to learn, what they enjoyed about the lesson or unit, and do they have any suggestions for change. This has been an excellent way to hear from our students and grow our program. We are learning that it is okay to listen to students. They have some great things to say.
Next, we want to hear from you. Please complete and submit the following survey. It should not take more than 10 minutes of your time and we appreciate your feedback. It allows us to see what we are doing that is great and what areas we need to improve.

What Do School Counselors Do? (Part 2)
In addition to helping students academically, school counselors also assist students as they develop socially and emotionally. Students mature at such different ages, it can make it very challenging to navigate the high school years. Your student’s counselor can help by offering strategies to cope with some these changes and helping them realize some of what they are experiencing is completely normal.
When things are difficult and you just need additional help, we can also provide a community resource list to you with professionals in the area. Feel free to call or email your student’s counselor.
Our main goal is to partner with you as you prepare your student for their future. Let us know how we can help.
Freshman Parents
It is that time of the year for our four-year graduation planning meeting. Your student created a plan with their 8th grade counselor last year. We want to revisit that plan with you and your student to make sure everything is still okay. Please give your student’s house office a call to schedule a meeting with the counselor. The meeting should take about 30 minutes. We have a variety of times available. Call soon to schedule yours. Meetings begins Wednesday, February 1st.

BHS Mock Trial Team
The BHS Mock Trial Team is advancing to the Semi-Finals this Friday with their criminal case: State of Texoma vs. Houston Whit.
This past weekend our BHS Mock Trial Team traveled to Valley Mills High School for a Mock Trial Scrimmage on Friday; and then on Saturday, traveled to the Downtown Fort Worth Tarrant County Courthouse to compete in their very 1st Criminal Mock Trial in front of real judges and attorneys that work out of the DFW area. Thousands of high school students from across the state participate each year in this challenging academic event. It was a very long and trying day with 15 teams from surrounding schools competing both on the State side and for the Defense. Our BHS Debate/Mock Trial Team consists of 4 students who act as lawyers, 6 who act as witnesses, and 2 timekeepers (with some students playing 2 different roles). Being our first year to ever participate in a Mock Trial Competition, the BHS Team did exceptionally well! There were 15 teams total in this first Regional Competition with only 4 teams advancing to the Semi-Finals. Your BHS Mock Trial Team WAS one of the 4 teams that did advance and will have the opportunity to compete again this Friday at the Tarrant County Courthouse. Only 1 of these 4 teams will get the chance to move on and compete at the state level. Please wish our competitors luck as they move on in this highly motivating, energetic, and challenging academic competition! They have a very difficult case, but are representing BHS proudly!

Optimist Club of Fort Worth Essay
Here at Optimist Club of Fort Worth, we expect a wave of essay contest submissions in advance of the entry deadline, 5 p.m. Feburary 10, 2017. This year we are accepting entries by email, and we encourage you to submit in this manner. If you choose to submit your entries by email, please use this email address:
essaycontest@optimistclubfortworth.org
The following guidelines will help our essay judges:
1. Examine each application to make sure the application is complete, including the student’s email contact information, DOB, and handwritten signature of a parent. The sponsoring club number is 38170.
2. Scan the application and the essay as a single PDF document. The completed application is the first page of your scan. The title page of the student’s work is page 2, and the content of the essay follows.
3. Name the scan with the student’s name. For example, if the student is John Doe, we suggest you name the PDF scan as Doe_John.pdf.
4. Address email entries to essaycontest@optimistclubfortworth.org.
5. You may submit multiple essays in a single email. Each essay with application should be submitted as a single PDF document. Please be aware that many email servers have limitations as to data capacity. As a general rule of thumb, when attachments reach the 10 MB level, it is useful practice to halt your attachments and start a new email for the next batch. We have found that we can usually accept up to 10 essays in a single email.
6. If you want assurance that your email was timely received, use the “Request a Delivery Receipt” option in your email application. This is how it looks in Microsoft Outlook:
The definitive rules which control the validity of submissions are those of Optimist International, which you will find on your application form at http://www.optimist.org/Forms/Essay_RULES_PAD-E_16-17.pdf.
The Board of Directors of Optimist Club of Fort Worth has noted the good response from Fort Worth area schools this year, and has determined that scholarship awards for essay winners at our local club level will be made for winning entries in the amounts of $1000 for first place, $750 for second place, and $500 for third place. The first place winner at the local level will be eligible for district competition, where a solo additional first place scholarship award shall be conferred by Optimist International, in the amount of $2500.
You may also submit by regular mail to Optimist Club of Fort Worth, Essay Contest, P.O. Box 101163, Fort Worth, TX 76185.
Late-received entries cannot be considered.
