Tēnā koutou katoa
Ngā mihi nui, kia koutou katoa - Warm greetings to you all
As part of our hauora (well-being), and culturally responsive initiatives, we start each school day with karakia and waiata.
Our karakia are used to focus our attention on the day ahead and give some direction regarding how we aim to approach our day of learning. We do not use any karakia with religious intent. Karakia is said together in both te reo Māori and English. We do recognise that often māori karakia are rich in metaphor and we are mindful that the English translation can fall slightly short of the intent. We use three different karakia across the school, one each in the junior, middle and senior teams, so that all of our students will leave TPS knowing three karakia. Below is the karakia we use in the middle team, to give you an idea of what is said each day.
Kia hora te marino
Kia whakapapa pounamu te moana
Hei huarahi mā tātou i te rangi nei
Aroha atu, aroha mai
Tātou i a tātou katoa
May peace be wide-spread
May the sea be like greenstone
A pathway for us all this day
Give love, receive love
Let us show respect for each other
The 18th of September will be our last Teacher Only Day for 2023. On this day, local Tauranga Moana schools will be attending the launch of te ao Māori local curriculum created by an extensive collaboration between local kura, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngāti Pūkenga. It is called Te Tai Whanake ki Tauranga Moana. Over 1500 local teachers will be in attendance where we will all be introduced to this resource that we can use to weave into our Social Sciences curriculum.
The next ballot for out of school zone enrolments is on Friday 13th October 2023, where places will be balloted and offered for Term 1 2024. If your child turns five in Term 1 2024, please contact our office and get the enrolment process underway, alternatively, you can enrol online via our school website.
Class Placement for 2024
Please note that one or two teachers may change class or year level due to normal staffing changes e.g. career progression.
While we ask parents to allow us to exercise our professional judgement in placing all children fairly, we do appreciate some input from families where specific needs should be considered. It is not possible for senior staff to meet with all parents and listen to individual requests. However, if there are extenuating or special circumstances that we may not be aware of, please put these requests in writing and ensure they are sent to me by the end of Week 2 Term 4, 28th October.
If there has been an issue in the past that we need to be reminded of, it is also worth sending an e-mail or talking to your child’s class teacher, as not all information is carried over from year to year.
Only requests made in writing will be considered
Nau mai haere mai to Matteo Sievwright, Harvey Herriott, Millie Sievwright, Annabelle Geros, Lachlan Brodie, Millie Herbert, Anaf Tafhim, MD Ibtesam Jamee, Nazah Nomany who started schooling at TPS recently. Great to have you and your whānau join our school community.
Ngā mihi maioha
