A Note from Mr. Hofer
As we continue to make progress in the 4th Quarter, I wanted to give you an update on a couple of upcoming events. The State of Illinois is still requiring students complete the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (3rd-5th Grade) and Illinois Science Assessment (5th Grade). The dates for those assessments are listed below. During testing weeks it is critical that students are eating a good breakfast and getting plenty of sleep. Helping with these two things can really make a difference for students' confidence and performance.
Beyond assessments, hard work is seen daily happening in our classrooms. Students are making growth. We cannot lose sight of the numerous other things our children have learned to do this year. Things that are not necessarily assessed on a state assessment. For example, students are navigating email and advocating for help and support more independently at 4th and 5th grade than ever before! ALL students have learned the meaning of adaptability and flexibility responding to, what seems like, a consistently changing world! We should take note and celebrate the skills students have developed DESPITE the challenges, obstacles and setbacks.
We can be proud of our children. More importantly, we can help our children FEEL proud of the work they've done this year by helping them identify the growth they have accomplished, even in the face of challenges.
We still have much to do in April and May and appreciate your continued support!
Southwest Math Challenge- REMINDER!!!
The Southwest Staff would like to issue a Math Challenge for each student to spend one hour a week outside of school working on math skills. Additional practice for one hour a week on top of the normal Math instruction will help your child improve their mental math and allow them to be better prepared for the next grade level. The programs below help struggling learners catch up and enrich students who are ahead. Each month fun incentives will be given to celebrate the hard work of those who have accomplished their goal. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
1st Successful Month: Teacher Provided Incentive
2nd Successful Month: Donut from Geneseo Donut Shop
3rd Successful Month: An extra 30 minute recess
