Indian Creek First Grade News
September 30 2019-October 4 2019
What are we learning?
We are working on creating stamina while reading to ourselves. We have gone over some strategies in reading for reading a book and how to hold and read a book. We are working on the pattern of words that are: consonants, vowel, consonants (CVC). Examples are CAT, DOG, and MAN. We will be looking at the letters placed in the beginning, middle and end of the words.
We are starting our guided reading groups. Your child will come home with 1 to 2 books in it that they will need to read to you. These books are on their level of independent reading. They need to practice reading for 10-20 minutes a night. They will need the book bag in their backpack everyday. How do you teach your child to read at home? First turn off the TV and Technology. Sit side by side with your child on the couch or at a dining room table. Watch them point to the words. Yes, it is still okay for our 1st grade friends to point to the words. Encourage them to point underneath the words as they read, matching 1 to 1.
Here are some other strategies:
- Look at the pictures.
- Have them get their mouths ready- say the beginning sound.
- Slowly stretch each letter sound to make words.
- Try to re-read the sentence- does it make sense?
- Flip the vowel sound- try the long or short sound in the word.
- Break the word into chunks you already know -/m/-at . /fl/-at
- Skip the tricky word. Read to the end. Then go back and try again.
- Carefully read the whole word, think about all the word parts.
- Think about what makes sense as you read.
Spelling Groups
We are starting the Words Their Way (WTW) Program this week. This will be our first week where students are grouped by color for their spelling group-silver, white, black and blue. It is not as simple as our 5 sight words. We will still be holding your child responsible for those words as well. Each group has a different learning objective based on a spelling inventory given earlier this year. It does take some effort and practice. As unusual and different as it sounds it does work on helping students understand the different spelling patterns. Students will need scissor, their WTW mat and pieces page. We have included links to videos to show you how to do the different sorts. The idea is that they practice moving the pictures or pieces on the mat 3 times at home. We will have practice time at school but the more times the children see and use a pattern the better it sticks. On Thursday night your child will need to affix ( glue stick is best ) the pieces to the board. Please do not allow your child to glue down earlier than Thursday night. The idea is moving and sorting pieces. They will need to turn the completed mat in on Friday. Each group will come home with a letter explaining the objective and what the pictures are. This will come MONDAY in your child's blue folder.
Here are video links showing how to do the sorts.

Social Studies
We will be working on who are our leaders. We will be discussing is the Mayor of Carrollton,
Governor of Texas and The President of the United States of America. We will discuss who are the leaders in our school. We will explore what leaders do on a regular basis.
Math
We are working math routines and exploring numbers 0-10. During this exploration we will work on both addition and subtraction up to 10. We are starting intentional problem solving where we will be working on strategies to solve word problems. Students will be able to explore math tools. Student should be able to explain how they are solving the problem.
Please start working on counting out loud with your child. All children need to be able to count out loud to 120. We call this rote counting- done without prompting. Also they need to count back from a set of given numbers. One might say count from 18 to 35. This would be an example of counting forward. One might say count back from 42 to 7. This would be an example of counting back. The best way to learn this is to make it a game for the car. Or at the table when you eat. Like any skill it has to be practiced. In order to help you with this task we have a 120 chart in your child's blue folder. In a few weeks your child will have to rote count for the teachers. We will give them 2 random number and they will have to count forward or back from any point on a 120 chart.
Science
We are working on science tools and properties of matter. We will be doing investigations comparing items by texture, weight, purpose, size and color.
What is the AUP?
This is from the technology department and it is very important.
Per LISD’s policy, all students who are using technology (regardless of grade), must have their AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) approved by a parent or guardian. Until this is completed, your child WILL NOT be able to use technology to enrich their learning during school hours. Please log into your Skyward account and scroll down until you get to Custom Forms (see picture below).
Once you get to this, click on BTS-1XUA. When you click on it, it should show you if you selected: “I allow” or “I revoke”. If it is set to “I REVOKE”, please change it to, “I Allow”.
EXAMPLE:
Change to from: “I REVOKE”
Change it to: I ALLOW

Being A Super Snacker and Meals
Hello Parents/Guardians,
The 21-Day Challenge registration began on Sept. 23 @ 12:01 a.m. and will end on Oct. 7th @11:59 p.m. — On-line sign-up at kids-teaching-kids.com Only parents may sign children up using parent email. No one will be allowed to sign up after October 7th. And there's no 8-digit code to have to remember this year. YAY!
Oct. 7th - Oct. 27th — 21 Day Challenge! The challenge isn’t complicated. Feel free to use the recipes in the healthy snack booklet or come up with your own thing. A healthy snack is as simple as choosing a banana instead of a candy bar or a handful of almonds instead of a handful of M&M’s. Give students reminders about making healthy snack choices and how they make life better. Let’s enjoy an all-around healthy month!
Nov. 11th @ 12:01 a.m. through Nov. 18th @ 11:59 p.m. — Parents be on the lookout for an email from MCCH, Medical City Children’s Hospital, that links to a short survey required to complete the challenge.
MCCH will provide rewards for all students who signed-up for the challenge and completed the post survey. But let’s encourage healthy snacking because great health is the best reward of great choices.
All you need is a STRONG MIND… A BRAVE HEART and YOU JUST CAN’T LOSE!
Happy Snacking!
Coach Parker
The first grade team has noticed that some of our students who go through the lunch line are buying more than one snack. We would never deny your child a snack, but we are seeing students purchase 3 and 4 bags of chips or fruit roll-ups. The part that we are worried about is them sharing with peers at the tables, which we have also noticed this week. Children are often not aware of peers having food allergies, so please discuss this with your child.
You can also contact food services to make requests to what your child is buying through the lunch line. For example: A student would buy 3 ice creams and the lunch staff could not stop him, until the parent puts a block on what he/she could purchase with their lunch money.
To reach the Child Nutrition Office by phone, the number is 469-713-5207.
Snacks In Classroom
We will do snacks after we return from MAPS in the afternoon. Your child can have one snack that is on the healthier side. Think pretzels, Goldfish, Kix cereal, Cheerios, granola, fruit, raisins and fruit leather. Please try to stay away from potato chips and other foods with negative food value.
WE ARE ALLERGY AWARE!
We have some students that have peanut and nut, eggs, soy and strawberry allergies.
