ACADEMIC UPDATES
Registration for Next Year's Courses - Happening NOW!
Please find a registration/academic advisement guide with links you will need to successfully complete this process. First, students should sign up for a time slot to meet with their counselor. Then there is a video to watch (ENGLISH version/SPANISH version) that will provide necessary information on how to register, this video is a reference as the student should have already viewed in homeroom on Tuesday, January 5. Additionally, there is a link to the Electives Fair site, if students need a reminder or what electives we will be offering. Also, there is a Course Sequence Chart to aid students in selecting the correct course in the core subject areas of English, Math, Science and Social Studies.
We want to remind rising 10th graders to sign up for Health if it fits into their schedule. A tool has been provided for students to copy and use to list the courses and course codes and then they are ready to enter their selection into StudentVue. Students should be sure to enter courses PRIOR to meeting with their counselor at their assigned times. Students will join their counselor on Zoom for their scheduled appointment where registration/advisement will be completed. Thank you and Happy Registration! The Wheaton Counseling Department.

Rising Business Club: DECA
The following article was written by a Yeabsira Moges, a senior at Wheaton.
“Preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs to be college and career ready.” These are the words that Wheaton High School DECA founder Ruhe Solomon had ruminating in her mind as she decided to start the club. DECA is one of the many new clubs established this year. Gaining popularity among the business-minded students of the school, the club provides students with a place to study finance, marketing, and management. The club also fosters a collaborative environment and a burgeoning sense of community.
Thinking back on her experience, both a new founder and student leader, Ruhe reflected that she learned to be “resourceful, and to try new ways to recruit members.” Being a club leader is an experiment of crisis management: Managing a club as a student is a constant balancing act between running the club and personal life. Meetings can earn entire weeks of planning, and each one requires extensive preparation, often requiring quick thinking when such is not the case. Recruitment is also a struggle as people’s home and school lives fuse, and students lose their retreat from work. DECA’s well run and positive environment contributes towards its stable and active membership. Not even the pandemic can slow this group down as they prepare for their virtual competitions. Ruhe believes that people join and remain in DECA because they “get to explore a lot of career paths and be a part of a great community.”
Ruhe’s advice for new clubs? It is integral to “be outgoing and have a solid plan when starting.” Keeping the quality of meetings hig
Athletics Update
As the New Year rings in, our student athletes have begun to create new dreams to soar higher than the previous year. With that in mind, our spring virtual season has proved to be a valuable learning tool here at Wheaton.
In the month of December, our student athletes were given an opportunity to participate in the systemwide speaker series to hear Mr. Omari Pearson and Mrs. Deb Hult. Mr. Pearson discussed how to begin an educational journey in pursuit of their financial, life, and career goals. Too often, this journey takes place later in life when the first steps can be taken at a very early age. Along with that message, Mr. Pearson explained the importance of short and long-term goal setting.
Mrs. Hult explained the concept of “Why I Can” for personal training. Mrs. Hult showed the importance of training not just for a sport, but creating lifelong training patterns. The importance of time management and figuring out what is important to each individual is the key to “Why I Can”. Mrs. Hult identified key components to a smart and safe training schedule.
Our baseball team under the direction of Coach McTighe has been using the virtual season to improve on situational baseball and learning the details of defensive positioning. Coach McTighe has used video to show plays from the collegiate and pro ranks to reinforce fundamental skills which can be applied at all levels. Our student athletes are looking forward to the day they can apply their new skills to actual game situations.
Due to a heavy request from students, registration for the spring season is still open. If you are still interested in participating in spring sports, please register at the following link https://forms.gle/hLZNrSLAtKEJ7nxo8
