New Staff

I have more new staff to introduce. Please read the following bios:

Becky Rause, Nurse

Hello Hanawalt students and families! I hope you all have had a wonderful summer! I have heard amazing things about this school and I’m very excited to be your new school nurse. I promise to do my absolute best to care for the students and all those that enter Hanawalt. I absolutely love being a school nurse and it is something that I'm very passionate about.

I’ve worked alongside many amazing teachers and staff of elementary, middle, and high schools, but being an elementary school nurse is where my heart is. I also enjoy spending time with my family, gardening, animals, art, biking, camping, and traveling. My husband and I recently celebrated our 20-year wedding anniversary, and we are enjoying life living in the country with our two daughters and two dogs. Please email, call or Snap message me if you have any school related health care questions or concerns throughout the school year.

Helpful items before this school schoolyear starts:

If your student has a medical condition and/or may take medication while at school, please notify me no later than 08/21/23. You can contact me by email at rebecca.lause@dmschools.org or Snap Message. Please turn in all healthcare paperwork and school medication to me on or before 08/21/2023. If you're attending the Open House, please stop by the Health Office to say hello and also to check if anything needs to be completed for your student before they start school. Thank you in advance for your help in making this school year start off strong. I’m looking forward to a great school year and getting to know you.

Blessings,

Becky Lause

Hanawalt Elementary School Nurse

Caroline Carpenter, 1st Grade

My name is Caroline Carpenter and I’m so excited to join the amazing 1st grade team at Hanawalt! I grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Drake University in 2019. For the past four years I have taught various grades at St. Augustin School, most recently 2nd grade. When I’m not teaching I love spending time with my husband and our dog, traveling, reading, attending yoga classes, and going to movies.

Stephanie Salmon, K-1 Associate

Hello! My name is Stephanie Salmon and I’m excited to be joining your Hanawalt team as a K-1 associate. I have been a kindergarten teacher for the past 30 years in Houston, TX, Johnston, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines. My husband Tim is an administrator for the Colfax Mingo School District and we have 2 daughters and a Cavachon named Kricket. Our oldest daughter Liz is a 6th grade teacher in Winterset and is getting married this July. Our youngest daughter Kate is a senior at Iowa. Although I am a UNI grad and a Panther fan, I am a Hawkeye mom and a big supporter of the Hawks! When I am not at school I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, going to concerts, traveling and decorating. I am looking forward to supporting the K-1 team and Hanawalt students next school year!

New Bathrooms and Playground Work

The bathrooms are almost finished. They are just putting the last few touches and cleaning. The outside is still a work in progress. They will not plant anything until this fall.

4th Annual OneRun

The 4th annual District-wide OneRun fundraiser will be held at Water Works Park on September 23rd, 2023, with check-in between 8:00-8:45 a.m. The event will be a 2-mile fun run/walk with an option to cheer on the sidelines as a supporter! Registration is free for everyone; participation is what will count.

Event fees will be paid by corporate and individual sponsors. Once participation totals are tallied, the money raised will be sent directly to the schools. Each participant may designate one school. The more participants and donations, the more money to Hanawalt!
