This week we are Celebrating Literacy as we do each year with Hawley Loves to Read Week. During this week, students participate in engaging and fun literacy activities. The highlight of the week is an assembly with a visiting author. This year, we are thrilled to announce that children’s author Jarrett J. Krosoczka will present to all K-4 students on Friday.

~Celebration of Learning ~

Three times a year, we gather as a school for our Celebration of Learning. This is a celebration about students led by students. Mr. P's 4th grade class had the wheel this go 'round as we were serenaded by Kindergarteners, 2nd graders did a little Reader's Theatre, we honored great Art, got ready for Jump Rope for Heart and so much more. It is always a joyous Celebration.

Sound Tigers Game

The Father's Club, once again, is sponsoring a Hawley outing to see the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Sunday, March 31. Hawley families will sit together and students will have the opportunity to hold the American Flag (On The Ice) during the National Anthem.

Storm, the Sound Tigers Mascot, visited the Mary Hawley Cafe to surprise students. It was a treat.

~ International Dessert Night ~

So many families came out last week for the PTA International Dessert Night. It is a fun-filled evening of desserts from Around the World, as well as activities and performances. Always a terrific event, Thank You to the PTA and all the parent and staff volunteers that put in so much time and effort on behalf of students for this event to happen.

Pennies for Patients

Hawley School’s Student Council is sponsoring “Pennies for Patients” that benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We are collecting change through THIS Friday. Your child can collect spare change to fill the box that he or she brought home.

Once your child has filled the container, it can be returned to school. The box can be filled and brought to school as many times as necessary over the course of the fundraiser. If you prefer online donations can be made by using this link: https://events.lls.org/pages/ctwhv/HawleyElementarySchool-2019.

The class who raises the most money will earn a class pizza party, and if the whole school reaches our fundraising goal, we will have extra recess for all!

We are presently on target to not just meet our goal but to surpass it. And, class races are very tight. THANK YOU for your support. Keep the pennies coming......

~ Read Across America ~

83 students participated in this endeavor. They read 50 books (25 fiction & 25 nonfiction) and colored their maps logging their journey across the country. This number of participants is up from last year- thank you parents for your support.

These students got to choose a book for themselves and for their classroom library. The variety of books were donated by Sandi Lubin, a volunteer at Scholastic Books (Thank You Sandi for your generosity)

When I am 100 years old!

Students wrote about what they would be doing when they are 100 years old. They also created self-portraits. I think this young man is going to grow up to be very handsome, although, not all people that look like this are 100 years old......just sayin......

Out of the Mouths of Babes.....

"Hey Mr. M! What do you call an Irish Spider?" a student asked their principal

"What?" inquired Mr. M

"A Paddy Long Legs"
