PADLET: SUPPORT AND EXTEND LEARNING
Use this virtual "parking lot" for comments, concerns, thoughts, and wonderings about reading and reading instruction in all content areas.
Agenda & Objectives

Why you should be having them read in YOUR class, even though you're not their reading teacher...
Real-time collaboration while reading a challenging text helps readers "crowd-source" in order to build understanding. It does NOT, however need to be done INSTEAD of face-to-face conversations.
Instructions for Prism:

*Also don't forget about your school librarian! If you want multiple books on a certain subject or topic to augment student learning, ask them to bring you a cart on the topic!
This is great for students who finish class work early!
Applying Literacy "Throughout" the Day
Skim the linked article: How could you use it for math, science, government, CTE, health, etc?
Reading Strategies for ALL Content Areas
KWL 2.0
How do you make it more effective?
Number everything in the 2nd column according to question/topic in the 1st column. This forces students to think more narrowly about their questions and really focus in.
This genuine inquiry and curiousity leads to more student buy-in and higher engagement in both class discussions, group work, and problem solving. It makes the topic they are learning more relatable. It makes it matter to them because they genuinely "WANT TO KNOW."
Somebody Wanted But So (Then)
In math: "The angle wanted to be acute BUT it had more than 90 degrees SO it had to be obtuse."
In history: "Princip wanted Serbia to be its own country BUT they were under Austria's rule SO he shot the archduke to start a war."
In science: The lemon wanted to stay acidic BUT it was eaten SO it became an alkaline.
Quickwrites
- before a lesson so teachers can check for prior knowledge and connections
- before a lesson to make predictions and inferences about what students will be learning.
- after a lesson as a processing tool; they can write to remember the steps of a procedure learned or important key details of the mini-lesson,
- after a lesson/activity to reflect on a group or class discussion.
Daily Doses of Literacy
- Model reading and writing in your classroom: Read aloud, encourage reading and writing often
- Celebrate reading and readers: Offer extra credit or make-up assignments that require reading/writing
- "Flipwork" information (requires students to read a short text about the next day's topic/lesson so they can build on their comprehension of what you'll be teaching by making connections to what they read)
- Challenge yourself and your team to think of new ways to include literacy (reading AND writing) in your classroom!
Not just reading but "THINKING" while reading
