Jackson Avenue's School-Wide Practices to Support Student Learning
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a collection of supports/practices that prepare students to be successful learners. Our site focuses on 3 key strategies: note taking, organization, and student goal-setting. Our teaching staff will be meeting this month to review how this looks at each grade level.
PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. Briefly, PBIS includes teaching students expected behaviors, intervening early to support students, and monitoring student progress. Our Stingray STAR motto is directly related to PBIS, as STAR is an acronym for scholarly, trustworthy, accepting, and responsible. At Jackson, our entire staff works to support students academically, behaviorally, and social-emotionally.
Sonday (pronounced Sunday) is a phonics supplement being used daily in our K-2 classrooms to build our emerging readers' skills systematically through a variety of activities, including movement. By design, it will help our students become better readers.
Designated Instruction in English for our Emergent Bilinguals (also referred to as English Learners) occurs daily in classrooms, as well for 30 minutes to support language development. Emergent Bilinguals learn the structures of language, including grammar and vocabulary, with the goal of being Reclassified English Proficient.
Overall, our Jackson Ave staff is working strategically to advance our students toward greater and greater achievement. We are thankful for your support and involvement.
