They got there team name from the gold rush in 1849.In 1971 and 1972 the 49ers won two more division titles but fell short in the super bowl losing in the playoffs each year.In 1979 the 49ers made a big move toward turning things around by selecting quarterback Joe Montana.Jerry Rice joined the team in 1985.The swift and sure-handed receiver would catch 1,281 passes ,score 187 touchdowns and post 19,247 receiving yards-all records.
The 49ers fell short in the super bowl in 1990 losing in the NFC championship.The team had a talented backup quarterback after Montana hurt his elbow.In 1994 the 49ers signed a new corner back Deion Sanders he was so fast they nicknamed him prime time.
The 49ers were charter members of all-American football conference which began play in 1946.In 1957 they tied Detroit for the western division crown but lost in a playoff.A bright new era dawned for the 49ers on March 31,1997 when Edward J DeBartolo Jr. became the new team owner.
The 49ers also won the NFC west in 1983 and did even better in 1984 with 18 wins in 19 games and a 38-16 super bowl xix victory over the Miami Dolphins.They have won 5 super bowls.In 1969: with injuries ravaging the defense the 49ers get off to a miserable start losing there first 5 games.The 49ers won there first game of the season on October 26,against the Colts.
The game that would take them to their first ever super bowl
In 1981 the 49ers would break out of the mold like champs.They breezed through the regular season and faced the Dallas Cowboys for the NFC championship.In the 4th quarter with minutes remaining Montana threw a pass to Clark that would be remembered as "the catch" that would take them to their first ever super bowl.
Seifert's record as the 49ers head man was awesome with two super bowl wins -- a 50-10 win over the Denver Broncos in super bowl xxiv and a 49-26 victory over the San Diego Chargers in super bowl xxix.
