Keeping the End in Mind
Dear Cougar Family,
I had the pleasure of working with our English I team a few weeks back to unpack their new curriculum documents as they planned for the second semester. We had rich conversations, much of which had to do with enduring understandings, essential questions and how that translated into creating assessments that are aligned to standards and learning goals for the unit. We also utilized Marzano's unit planning recommendations from The New Art and Science of Teaching, which overlaps nicely with Understanding by Design (more to come on that in a later post). My synapses were snapping and the dendrites were dancing. My inner nerd was delighted.
Since spending that day, elbow deep in curriculum work, I have thought a lot about assessment, both formative and summative, and what assessment looks like across disciplines and grade levels. It also sparked a desire to have a deeper understanding of all aspects of Understanding by Design, which led to finding this article on Edutopia, "An interview with Grant Wiggins: The Power of Backwards Design." Please take a moment to read this brief interview and consider how assessment is used in your classroom. In addition, there is a great infographic below which features the stages of backward design for a visual reminder of this aspect of UbD.
May you all have a fabulous week remembering to begin with the end in mind!
As always, COUGAR PRIDE!
