Outstanding Volunteers
During National Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 17-23, we recognize all of our volunteers and celebrate the vital contributions of service made by individuals and groups throughout the year. In 2021, seven hundred and eighty volunteers contributed over 10,000 hours of service to strengthen the City, make significant improvements in the community, and keep Tualatin growing and thriving.
Each year, City staff nominate volunteers they have worked with over the year who have been truly outstanding. We are pleased to announce the 2021 Outstanding Volunteers of the Year.
Outstanding Youth Volunteers
Satvika Vadapu – Satvika started out in the Tween TakeOver Program five years ago, and has volunteered every year since, in six different programs. In addition to being versatile, Satvika has demonstrated a strong capacity for leadership on the Teen Library Committee and with TEAM Tualatin, and has even led her younger sister Dhruvika into volunteering for the City. Thank you, Satvika for contributing 105 hours of your time and talent in 2021!
Ava Marsh - Ava has been giving her time, enthusiasm, and leadership abilities to volunteer programs since 2019. Ava is a TEAM Tualatin Volunteer, a member of the Youth Advisory Council and a Do-It-Yourself Volunteer. Ava served 98 hours and made a huge contribution to the community in 2021. She adopted the Jurgens Park Community Garden from June through September and through her commitment gave the community a beautiful public space to wander through and learn about vegetables, herbs, and pollinator friendly plants.
Aaliyah De La O - Aaliyah began volunteering as a Library Summer Teen in 2018 and has returned ever since. In 2021, Aaliyah served 70 hours and was everywhere: helping the Library as a Summer Teen, caring for our Parks and trails with TEAM Tualatin, lending her ideas and leadership to Teen Library Committee, and helping on all three days of Viva Tualatin. Aaliyah’s warm personality and can-do attitude make her an outstanding volunteer and well-connected citizen of Tualatin!

Washington County Rental Assistance will Reach Capacity
Washington County Will Reach Capacity in its Emergency Rental Assistance program effective Friday, May 6th
Beginning Friday, May 6th, Community Action will cease taking applications for its Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) program to ensure that it can meet obligations for applications currently in the pipeline. The purpose of the ERA program has been to help stabilize households unable to pay rent and utilities due to impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. Washington County estimates that nearly all the $29 million in federal emergency rental assistance allocated to Community Action has been requested by community members, and the program will be fully committed in the coming weeks, meaning the anticipated dollar requests in the application pipeline will reach the threshold of what is available. All applications from eligible households who apply by end of day May 6, including current pending applications, will be processed.
To-date, Community Action has paid out $16 million in local emergency rental assistance providing relief to more than 2,100 renters impacted by the pandemic. Another $13 million is available to service received applications. Considering all funds managed by Community Action combined, the agency has pumped over $46 million into the community since the pandemic began and helped to forestall over 5,000 evictions. Another $41 million from the State of Oregon’s ERA program has also supported Washington County community members. 53% of all households served by Community Action are from communities of color. 70% of the households served had incomes below 30% median family income (or incomes below $29,000 for a family of four) highlighting the impact on people most vulnerably housed.
Washington County continues to encourage landlords to contact Home Forward, the administrators of the State’s Landlord Guarantee Program, which will remain in place until the summer of 2023 or until funds are fully obligated, whichever comes first. Landlords may reach out to explore options under that program via phone at (503) 802-8532; by e-mail, LGP@homeforward.org; or through their website: www.oregonlgp.org/contact.
