Gifted and Talented Learners
How can we help them succeed?
What does it mean to be gifted?
Students who are gifted demonstrate exceptional aptitude in one or more academic areas, including reading, writing, math, and science. They may also show advanced skill in verbal communication, leadership skills, high levels of creativity, and unusual artistic or musical abilities.
How Can We Challenge Gifted Students Within the Traditional Classroom?
Encourage deeper thinking and foster problem-solving skills through collaboration and open-ended learning activities, such as experiments, independent projects, vertical enrichment, and opportunities for research and sharing. Gifted students thrive when they discover new information, and other students can benefit from them sharing what they have learned.
Enrichment Activities for Gifted Students
Individual Projects
Can be personalized for each student. Encouraging research and discovery helps gifted students build upon their strengths while also supporting independence. Supervised internet exploration and learning to differentiate between reliable and unreliable sources are fundamental skills that will be important throughout life.
Hands-On and Creative Activities
Doing experiments, inventions, writing fiction stories, designing historically inspired clothing or artifacts, creating art, and writing songs are all examples of activities that enrich the learning experience and allow gifted students to flourish.
Real World Activities
Organizing a fundraiser, visiting farms, museums, or other locations that support the curriculum, writing a letter to the editor of a local paper about an area of public concern, and planning activities such as scheduling, planning meals, and making grocery lists are activities that translate to real world experience, which is important for all students and especially engaging for gifted students.
Because Neglecting The Gifted Means Kissing Our Future Goodbye
